Ok next week i am heading on a family vacation with my parents to alaska. I am planning on bringing my DVX and filming the trip. I hope to edit my footage into a short video of the trip. Just with different artsy shots around Alaska including a plane ride tour of a mountain ridge.

Does anyone have any suggestions for my trip. Meaning what to film or what settings to use. I am kinda a newbie. I am most interested in what settings would look best when filming "nature shots"....THANKS!

Cool! Wish I had my DVX when I visted Alaska last time. Dang - that could make for some great images.

You might consider asking Disjecta about his settings. He does a lot of nature stuff and it's always great. I know he has posted the specific settings here multiple times so a search may be more preferable. Try searching for "Waters Edge" or "Brackendale"

Where in Alaska will you be visiting?

Just make sure to white balance so it wont all look blue. If it were me I would film it like anything else. Try to get the natural color and the best lighting for it. You can do cc when you get back to make the image better or different.

Well, I would just white balance to daylight and continue white balancing as the sun light changes, shoot rivers, reflections of mountains and trees in rivers, white snow cap mountains, wildlife, whales if you can catch them when they breach (HVX200 would have been perfect for this), fishing communities/villages, Alaskan Indians, vessels. From the air, get all the footage you can, may be a sweep over the trees, make sure you get a side shot on take-off and landing. Some planes have a little/cheap stabilizing system for cameras, this may work with the DVX. There is so much to shoot in that neck of the woods. Also catch sunrise and sunsets. Try to catch a misty morning dew as the sun beams through the trees. Don't know if you can see the Northern Lights around this time of year. I think your magic hour is more like 3 magic hours. I would write a little script may be on the plane and shoot a story. I'm sure there are nice pubs out there as well so may be a talk with a fisherman telling folklore stories or stories about the big one that got away, etc.

I would take a polarizer, neutral density filters as well as graduated ND filters. May be even a Tiffen black promist filter, a coral filter or use Barry Green's settings from his book/dvd, a rain protector for the camera, SKINTASTIC for insects (very important), a good microphone and A LIGHT WEIGHT TRIPOD (you will thank me for this one). LOTS OF BATTERIES if you will be away from electricity, a flashlight, small first aid kit, water. This is also a great way to experiment using time lapse, slow motion, etc. Good luck and tell us how you made out.
