Advice on dealing with 'motion' in video

Hi all -- Casual/occasional video production guy here. I shot a parade recently using an HPX-170 in one continuous take, using slow pans. I edited in Sony Vegas 10 using a 30fps timeline widescreen DV template.

Here's the footage: https://youtu.be/VNpkPHF2pw0 (Just click to the middle somewhere to see a random pan shot.)

Any time I make a pan the image jitters. what does this issue look like to you? I'm inexperienced using this particular P2 camera, but wondering if I'm editing in a mismatched timeline or have wrong render settings, etc. (It's rendered out as an MPEG-2 file). I used lower quality "DV" settings so I could fit maximum footage on my card.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks David. I'm not at home with my gear to check but I will follow up with a reply when I get there.

I also sent the footage through the Raylight encoder software prior to editing. (Of which I also have little experience with.)

Somewhere the deinterlacing settings got messed up. It looks like you have double-interlacing, where you had interlaced footage, edited it as if it were de-interlaced, then exported it as interlaced again.

You need to check the camera and timeline settings. Why did you encode before editing? I would skip that step and take footage straight from the camera into Vegas. Also check your export settings for interlacing.

Thanks for the replies. In tracking down settings I see I was somehow shooting 24P & didn't realize it; I adjusted the shutter thinking I was shooting otherwise. Regarding Raylight, I was under the impression you had to use it when editing P2 clips in Vegas (& those were being transferred using 'native frame size' and '60i/60p default system'. After seeing your reply, I'm guessing you only need it if you're going to copy the files for later editing (i.e. not from the P2 card itself)?

The information below should shed light on my mistakes.

Settings:
Camcorder: Recording Format: 480i/24P, Shutter 1/60

Vegas Template: NTSC DV Widescreen (720x480, 29.970 fps), Lower field first, Deinterlace method 'Blend fields'

Vegas Render Settings: Video: 29.970 fps, 720x480 Lower field first, YUV, 6 Mbps, Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.212, MPEG-2

Settings:
Camcorder: Recording Format: 480i/24P, Shutter 1/60

Shutter speed is irrelevant. Was this 24P or 24PA? It matters.

Vegas Template
: NTSC DV Widescreen (720x480, 29.970 fps), Lower field first, Deinterlace method 'Blend fields'

There's the lion's share of your problem. Never, EVER deinterlace 24p footage. Ever. Either remove pulldown properly and edit on a 24p timeline, or leave it alone and edit as 60i with NO deinterlacing.

Vegas Render Settings
: Video: 29.970 fps, 720x480 Lower field first, YUV, 6 Mbps, Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.212, MPEG-2

If you remove pulldown and edit properly as 24p, you should then export as 24p, not 60i.

Here, on top of the problems with deinterlacing, etc., you exported as 60i and then uploaded to YouTube, which then deinterlaced AGAIN and converted it to 30p, and two things you never, ever want to do with 24p footage is (again) deinterlace it OR try to convert it to 30p. You basically compounded problem on top of problem.

Now, there are more issues:

What version of Vegas do you have?

What version of Raylight do you have?

You say you transcoded the footage using Raylight -- what were the settings?
