I have a few questions about building an editing workstation for Final Cut Pro but first I should probably explain the situation I'm being presented with:
I work for a non-profit doing video editing and production/post production work. As part of a grant for a this program we are doing currently, I have been given about 3500 dollars to buy a computer and an non-linear editing program in order to complete the editing for this project. My preference is Final Cut Pro since I am comfortable and familiar with it.
the thin is our company may not exist by the end of this summer and I have been informed that if the organization does dissolve, that I am going to be able to keep whatever computer and editing software I buy for this project.
I am trying to keep my options and flexibility open for the future if my job doesn't exist soon, so that I have at least the beginnings of what I would need to build an editing workstation for Final Cut. But I don't really have the money to go and plunge into purchasing a mac Pro tower and final cut studio and an additional monitor with this budget.
What I have decided to do is purchase a refurbished macbook pro (the last model, prior to the new solid-state model) final cut studio, and a 19 inch lcd monitor as a second monitor. That basically eats up the $3500 dollars.
Now looking to the future, I wanted to know is it possible from this to build an acceptable editing workstation (complete with external capture card/device such as an aja io) a high definition preview monitor (to do color correction and effects work), ESata hard drive system, and some sort of hd tape deck, so that I cold theoretically edit hd either in real time, or without projects taking hours upon hours to render??
If so, does anyone have any suggestions as to what external equipment would be best??
Also, I have been thinking down the line to also purchase a new video camera if I end up going the freelance route. I have been looking into the Panny HCM 150, but know there are issues with ingesting the footage into FCP, and that you need to transcode the footage in another codec, does anyone have an opinion on whether this would be a wise camera choice??
Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
