Hi Guys,

Im working with a Canon XH-A1s and brevis adapter and have so far been doing my shoots with a 50mm Zeiss 1.4.

Im looking at getting a 28mm and a zoom. Pretty much know which 28mm im getting but need clarification on the settings for a zoom as im still learning.

When looking at zoom im seeing f4-1.4 now im assuming its 1.4 but what is the f4? Just alittle confused.

Any advice would be great

cheers,

Sean.

The further in you zoom, the more light you lose. The two apertures that are listed on the lens are the apertures for the widest and narrowest fields of view. In your example, F1.4 is the widest the aperture can go when you're zoomed all the way out, and F4 is the widest the aperture can go when you're zoomed all the way in.

oh cheers that makes sense.

I guess this wouldn't be a great zoom to go for then right? Since Ive been told I shouldnt go for anymore than 2.8 on the aperture scale.

4 would be pushing it would you say? I dont know what is the usual specs for a zoom when using it with an adapter?

The price will tempt you, but do not get a 'push-pull' zoom lens. Critical focus by means of zooming in and zooming back out, isn't possible. Plus focus pulls w/o changing focal length can get tricky. Just stay away.

Yeah stay away from zoom lenses while you're learning I think. They're convenient but learning on primes is the way to go in my opinion.

Yeah I just go tone of the push pull lenses off eBay and it sucks...it was not in the description of the item that it was a push pull. Don't do it!
