Advice needed on mixer selection & mics

This is my first post. I have learned a lot by hanging around you folks!

I have $1300 budget for a mixer. I thinking of the Sound Devices 302. I like the idea of 3 channels.

I also have a question about using the Oktava MK012 with a bbg and windjammer. Can I get away with using this mic outdoors? My budget for mics is about $1200. I was thinking of getting 1- MK012 and 1- AT4073a. I would like to avoid the AT4073a if the MK012 rigs would suffice. My preference would be to have 2 of the MK012's. Will this limit me?

For wireless I am fairly set on using the Sennheiser 1- EW112P-G2 and 1-EW100ENG-G2. This should give me 2 lav sets and a clip on mic trans.

I will primarily be doing docs. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you're putting together a really great kit there. Well done on not trying to cut corners! lol

You can use the Oktava quite nicely outdoors, but I would get the 4073a - sometimes you just have to shoot in noisy places, and the Oktava wont reject off axis audio as well at the AT. Although, you could always just use the lavs for those times.

Why do you want 2 Oktavas, btw?

Two things maybe you have overlooked: 1- The standard lav mics that come with the G2 sets are pretty horrible. If you skip on the 4073, maybe consider getting some countryman b6's, or EMWs. They should upgrade the sound of the G2 by putting better audio INTO the system. 2- What do you want to run on the clip on mic trans? Remember the 100 version doesnt do phantom, so the at4073a and the mk012 wont be able to work with it...

PS - Sound Devices 302... *swoon* best mixer, like, ever. :)

Thanks Timapter,
I will be working with musicians some of the times. I wanted to be able to mic a guitarist with vocals, or 2 acoustic instruments. Getting 2 Octava with the 3 caps gives me this option. I have a slew of sm58's & sm57's, but wanted something better.

It did not occur to me about upgrading the lavs, appreciate that one. I will be using the clip on for other purposes and it comes cheap in the kit.

I was looking without success for the pickup pattern of the AT. I wanted to compare it to the Octava to see just how much peripheral I am going to pick up with the mk012. Do you know where I could find that graph?

Nice setup. You won't be disappointed in that mixer. If you are (but you won't be), I promise you you can turn around and sell it for very little lost (just come in here, plenty of people looking to buy all that gear).

The biggest thing you seem to be missing on your equipment list is a shockmount, boom pole, and wind protection. Fill those out (and upgrade the lavs per tim's post) and you are set for just about anything.

Good luck
