Advice needed on buying a tripod

My budget is around HK $3000 (US $380)

But I dont know anything at all about tripod jargon.

Basically I just want a good steady tripod, but with the smoothest head possible for the price.

I dont know about specific brands, and what is available here in HK. But if you could just enlighten me about what to ask for, and what to try out in the shops. So they dont think Im a newbie and rip me off.

Are bogen one of the better brands then. I might check out the 501.

Is it best to buy a head and base seperately in general? Or just go for the whole package?
 
I would say its one of the better brands for your price range. The benefit to buying a kit is that you get pretty much all you need. But if you need to customize your needs, you may want to look for legs that go higher or lower or lighter or heavier, all of course depending on your needs.
 
well i guess my needs are general. I will be shooting in all conditions, rough hills and smooth indoor tiled floors etc.

Whats the difference between heavy and light legs? Just stability right?
