Advice for RODE and Camera

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
Hey all,

I have a DVX, and the RODE mic. When I go on shoots, for say a short fim, Ill bust out my RODE mic, with my RODE pole. I have a 30 foot xlr cable. Now i don't know if this is a stupid question, but do you have any advice on how to carry these things from say, point a to b in a small room, without damaging anything? MEaning, since the chord is so long, I have almost had some cases where it would hook onto things and knock them over, and could've possibly pulled my camera with it, i dont know, just some examples.

should the boom operator always carry the chord in his hands, and stay close to the DP and the camera it self?

Thanks.

If you're acting as the boom op, it's your responsibility to manage the cable. Get a cable hanger and clip it to your belt, so you can keep excess cable coiled and out of the way. Sometimes you might need to have a PA help if there's going to be camera movement during a shot.

If you mean moving from one spot to another in room to change set ups, why not just unplug the XLR from the camera?

The boom guy/PA/whatever should worry about sound stuff, and the camera person should worry about the DVX and tripod.

You could always just try being careful....

If you mean during shooting, then block the scene out, remove what you can from oustide shot that is in the way of movement, and try taping down XLR at certain points so it pivots from safer area.

If it is just you and boom guy, you're filming, so boom op should look out for these things as he moves durring shoot.

Learn how to do the over under with your cables. It will extend their life, and keep them from getting tangled and damaged. This is for storage and for your sound guy if he is holding the mic and moving around extending and retracting the cable as he moves. This way he keeps all excess cable in his hand.

It's very simple to do. It's basically coiling the cable in a way that it doesn't twist it.
