Hello there friends and workers alike,

Hope you are all keeping well after the holidays.

Just popping on to see if there are any black and white purists here that could maybe offer some advice with regards to post process for black and white footage shot on a GH1 DSLR.

Now, i'm talking in general terms here, I realise that, in all seriousness, a snippet of the film would give people a better understanding, as well as shot settings, but i'm just generally enquiring really...

Form what I understand, this was recorded as B&W to start with? Something to keep in mind is that behind every great color image is a great black and white image. In all scenarios, the green channel carries about 70% of all luma information when shooting in color. I am not familiar with how the GH1 creates B&W while shooting - whether it just removes the R and B channels or does it channel its luma information into the final recorded G channel, etc. So same rules apply whens hooting for exposure, where you want to place your shadows, highlights, etc. Then in post during color correction playing with that curve to get the look you want. From there you can add contrast and saturation and such to give it a rich or more washed out B&W look and feel. Magic Bullet looks has some nice B&W presets derived from color material material, but it may make for a starting point when working from original B&W material.

And again, assuming you are actually acquiring B&W at time of shooting, an interesting test would be to shoot same material as color and work both images in post to see what you gain by shooting B&W only to start with and may answer some of the questions alluded to above.

Excellent advice Michael, thanks very much.

I tried Magic Bullett Looks, I think that is what I was after really, it really is an excellent tool.
