Advice for lighting on the fly interviews

We have been requested to shoot some impromptu interviews of some VIP's at a dinner. The setting will be a Hotel Restaurant and we are not sure of the lighting there. We are shooting with a HVX200. Any suggestions on what we can do to light as effectively as possible? We have a lighting kit (Rifa, Omni, Tota) but im doubtful we will be in a position to use it. Would a reflector be useful? We are new to lighting, especially on the fly interview style. Any advice would be much appreciated.

you could go "news crew" style and mount a pag-light to the camera. they give a pretty nice even light and are quite controllable (barn doors, diffusion, flood/spot etc.).

if you wanted to have a little more control over position/distance etc. you could mount it to a boom pole and have someone "operate" the light?

take a bunch of gels with you that will match the colour of the enivornment and i reckon you could make it blend quite nicely.

i've run a pag light on a camera with two batteries for about 4-5 hours (almost constant use).

Thanks very much. So the Paglight is a brand of external light, correct? Do they require their own batteries? I am short on time so wondering where i might pick one up in Europe. Are there other brands you could recommend?

Another option would be to relamp your Rifa and Omni lights to 12 volts, and run them from a battery (even a car battery would do the trick if you're short on time and funds).

The Omni uses EYL lamps (12v/100 watts), and the Rifa 44 uses GCC (12v/100 watts). The Rifa 55 and 66 can't be run on 12 volts, unfortunately.

If you have a Lowel Pro Light, they can also take the GCC lamps for 12-volt operation.

Good luck!
