Advice for Indie-Filmmaking Mic

I currently own/use a Senheiser ME66 shotgun mic. While the audio quality is decent, I'm looking to step up to something cleaner and more natural sounding. Now, I'll freely admit my lack of knowledge on this subject. I've heard that for indoor shots hypercartoid mics are best, while outdoor shots require shotgun mics. I'll probably have a budget around $1000 (which will obviously limit my choices), so combining the two mics would be best. I've heard that the Senheiser 416 is a good mic.

Any thoughts/advice?

416 is a good choice , for hyper you can look for used mbho 603- with k-500 whicjh is exellent mic or used mkh 406 that casn match 416 nicely .
oktava , my chiniz friend ( similar to sontronics sts-1)
new se-300 +93 akg( blue line) could be another choice
