anyone here involved in the ad agency world? any advice on it? i would like to work w/ print & tv ad's.

thanks.

Aren't you already interning at an ad agency at the moment? If so, that sounds like a great move in that direction to me.

yea i am. its a great environment! but i just wanted to get some advice from others. i mostly work w/ print ads though.

I deal with ad agencies and marketing companies alot. I do mostly still architectural photography, with some video. I just shot two QTVR object movies of architectural models for an agency that represents Marriott Hotels. It went great. Some agencies are great, and some are totally full of pompous asses. I love digital because you can e-mail the art director results. I hated the "old" days of film, sitting at the light box waiting for the art director to finally show up to see the latest transparencies. They are cool places to work though. Have fun. It seems to me that once you get in the inside loop, you've got a job for life. The agencies around here seem to trade off employees alot.

kai & pptphoto,

how much do you 2 like working in this field? how did you get started? if its not to personal, what's the average yearly income?

I know editors that make a killing, doing very little and ones that do plenty and earning very little... same with producers, the real money is in copy writing! and again it depends on how much cologne you can manage... :)

Worked at two different Ad Agencies in Seattle. Doing mostly print/web stuff for Microsoft. Also, my Dad had a large agency in Houston where I interned and worked. He mainly did oil and gas projects. And years back I worked at a TV Station in Austin where I did promotions and TV ads. It's a great business to be in. The brainstorming and excitement of a new project. The feeling you have when a client chooses your idea/comp from a dozen others. The money was good too. :) As long as you're able to compromise sometimes then you'll be fine. Sometimes the client is wrong and no matter how hard you try to convince them otherwise, they're going to want what they want.

Go for it, aaron. You'll learn a lot and have fun too (if you find the right agency). Good luck!

pk gillock,

yes i am definitely gonna go for it. right now im in pre-prod on a spot that i feel comfortable with. i will feel my reel w/ about 3 spec spots and shop them around to a few reps/ promo comopanies i have contacts at. hopefully i can get on a prod. company directors roster! but in the meantime, ill continue to work for my bfa in communication design and build a reel.

Who can turn the world on with his smile
Who can take a nothing day and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile
Well, it's you, Aaron, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around no need to waste it
You can have a town why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all
You're gonna make it after all

I love what I do. I get to do some high profile stuff, and it's always changing. Film, video, photography, print, web, etc. Shoot the other day I found myself sitting and making model airplanes all day to use as props for a stop motion spot i'm doing. It's definitely diverse.

On the financial side, it's very rewarding. That said, there are always two ends to every spectrum. If you're just starting out entry level vs creative director etc. I'm an art director/designer/producer, and my company is willing to let me run my own gig on the side as well, so that's a blessing.
