Advertising Wedding Services

I am looking to start out into some videography services. I am going to begin calling businesses with-in the next few weeks for some corporate work, in accordance with the great advice I got from here. Yet, I wanted to get some more start up cash before diving into that by filming weddings. And I am really having trouble figuring out effective ways of advertising for weddings.

I have a website I am in the midst of designing right now, which is turning out quite well. And as soon as that is finished, I am going to start getting it into some of the local databases for wedding suppliers. Yet, other than that, I am at a loss.

So, for those of you who have done weddings, how have you let your services been known to the world? As I have never planned a wedding for myself, I am not certain as to how people go about finding videographers and the like. Do they usually go through their planner for suggestions? Should I try to get in touch with local wedding planners? Should I drop off business cards at bridal shops and such in the area?

I am very much at a loss, so any help would be great.

Thanks.

About 15 years ago I did exactly the same thing; I started a Video production business and was keen to start filming weddings. For me I knew a photographer who was already working in this area he advised me to have a look at getting into some Bridal Fairs, sort of like a 1 or 2 day event like a expo where couples come and see all the business that offer something that has to with weddings, from Video & photographers to limos and musicians etc.
I had managed to get 2 weddings under my belt which happened to be friend’s weddings; I came up with a 20min edit from these which looped on a S-VHS deck (no digital back then!). Our first bridal Fair we booked 8 weddings. From there on we did at least 2 of these Bridal Fairs a year 5 years after that I quite my job in the building trade and went full time into the weddings, filming around 45-50 a year and I did the odd wedding magazine advert here and there along the way.

I've steered away from them over the past 3 years and have now turned more to the corporate work and TV commercials, I have 1 wedding booked this year, which will make it 436 weddings that I have filmed and edited.

I would definitely look around for these and even contact some photographers. You'll definitely need some work to show so you may have to shoot a few for free or at best a real small fee.

Good Luck
