Advanced 24p editing issue

Hey all-

I just filmed for a week in New Orleans on a business trip and am having some issues now, and refilming is not an option due to my living in Oakland. So my question for you all is, what is the best sequence setting in FCP to edit advanced 24p footage? If I simply use NTSC 24frame mode, I still get the lines through every third frame, so is there a setting that would somehow remove that, or am I just boned?
Thanks for your help.

When shooting pa, you need to make sure you capture and edit on a 24p timeline. That's what pa is for. Editing on a 24p timeline with NLE's that are pa aware.

You came to N.O. and didn't look me up. Dude...

In your browser, right click the clip, go to Item Properties, to Format. What is the Vid Rate? That'll tell you how you captured the footage. If it's not 23.whatever, it wasn't captured with the pulldown removed, which can only be done with 23pA footage, not 24p footage.

and you don't want to use "frame mode" a la the canon cameras... your sequence settings should just read DV NTSC 23.98. If you captured with the pulldown removal then you'll be set to go. Be sure to create a new sequence after you change the settings as FCP will not update any sequences already created.

Regarding this thread, I'm in a quandry. I am about to start capturing footage I have begun shooting for a feature length doc. I'm shooting with a DVX100A in 24PA with a Letus35 FE because I love the look it provides. However, the doc is going to include a decent amount of archival footage for Prelinger archives and the Library of Congress. Obviously this footage will be downloaded and most definitely will not be progressive. Should I still edit in a 24P timeline? If I edit in a 29.97 timeline due to the amount of archival footage that will be used, do I still capture my 24PA footage with the pulldown removal?

What is your final ouput? Broadcast (which isn't 24p anyway) or film or DVD? I consider my final distribution as a major factor in deciding what format I want to produce a project with.

Initially our output will be DVD and probably broadcast, but if all goes well we are hoping for a distribution deal which I'm certain would mean we would want to go to film. I'm sure that doesn't help too much.

Film/DVD I'd go 24p. Broadcast, that's always a coin toss for me. But, I normally stick with 24p anyway. When I do TV spots that I know will only show on TV, I shoot 30p and output NTSC 60i for the stations.

Depends on the quality of the archival footage. I'd probably just drop a deinterlace filter on it all and then just drop it into my 24p Sequence. If there's a lot and that sounds like a PITA, then use FCP's Batch Export function or Compressor to save it out as 24p in your Sequence's native format.
