ADOBE announces new universal Format

Dark Side of the Camera
Adobe today announced that it plans to lead an initiative to define an industry-wide open file format for digital cinema files to streamline workflows and help ensure easy archiving and exchange. Adobe intends to leverage its successful Digital Negative Specification (DNG) file format as a foundation, and Adobe plans to work with a broad coalition of leading camera manufacturers, including Panavision, Silicon Imaging, Dalsa, Weisscam, and ARRI—along with software vendors, including Iridas and The Foundry, and codec provider CineForm—to define the requirements for an open, publicly documented file format that it plans to call CinemaDNG.

That's what MXF was supposed to be, more or less. I'm gonna bet the usual suspects aren't going to play ball with this one, either.

Adobe and its wills to become universal... My opinion is that this kind of universal would be great but difficult to achieve, if just one manufacturer rejects it, it won't be universal.

Great! We really need, yet, another format...

yes more formats, I'm already thinking about writing a format dictionary with all the past, current and the formats available in the future...

Ahh standards. They never miss. Beta MAX HDDVD. Nice idea adobe but I doubt you will unify the standards universe.

Unless they provide universal, royalty and condition free patent licenses along with their specifications, then their format won't be "open." Being able to access a format's documentation doesn't mean that the format itself is freely usable. Look at the Xvid codec-- the code itself can be freely implemented, but in order to legally us it the end-user needs an Mpeg-4 patent license.

I hope Adobe follows the lead of the Xiph Foundation, and insures that their format can be used by anyone, for any purpose without restriction, just like Ogg Vorbis and Ogg Theora.

I think this is a GREAT idea...................... too bad it's about 3-5 years late. Adobe is the 100 # gorilla in this business. Plenty strong and noisy but not nearly big enough to pull this off.

Also, "successful DNG......." are you kidding?

Oh, did I mention that Adobe is pretty greedy when it comes to sharing profits. LOL

How is Adobe the 100# gorilla in the business? Would some of you being saying the same thing if AVID or Apple annouced this attempt at a universal format?

Well, a 100 lb. gorilla isn't really very much of a gorilla...

So funny that they want the "Universal Format" to be theirs! :) I'm glad they are only thinking of our benefit. :)

Don't get me wrong, it would be great, but why a new one?
I remember at NAB a number of years ago, there was a conference where mxf was supposed to be the "new single standard". Too bad the powers that be couldn't organize that.
