Looking for a woman
some words are highlighted in green and an admedia popup comes up when i move the cursor over the word. does anyone else see this or is my computer infected with a virus?

you're infected. do not pay for any solution you find on google. the current trend is to create a virus and then pepper the web with paid 'solutions'. the solutions don't work and they get your credit card details and install more malware. you will find hundreds of forum posts and testimonials linking to paid solutions. most antivirus forums and blogs are fake and/or infected. no legitimate virus removal software is dedicated to a single virus.

you may find a legitimate forum post that provides detailed instructions to delete relevant files and manually edit your registry. only pay attention to credible sites that you have heard of before, preferably one not dedicated to virus/adware removal (mostly fake). don't use any automated process for download because it will just install more malware. i recently got a similar trojan that hijacks google. you will probably ultimately have to do a reinstall to completely remove it as antivirus software is next to useless.

I believe the Admedia virus is also known as Kaspersky if that helps your search. Expect to spend hours finding a solution and probably still having to do a clean install. Also if you get messages popping up about hard disk failures and deleted files keep your head. It's fake, most likely the virus has just changed the file properties to hidden. It's a trick to make you panic and use bad judgement and funnel you towards their fake anti-virus software.

Glad to hear that. Keep your AV updated.

Unless we're talking rootkits or implementation through advanced rootkit techniques (not some service registry entries) then a format isn't necessary. Things like Malwarebytes and Dr.Web can usually, and easily, remove them at application level. If not, then a live scan cd or flashdisk will do the trick. I prefer finding the problem vs formatting, as the source of the infection can be identified and the hole plugged.

I have removed a lot of viruses (never from my own machines...I haven't gotten an infection in decades) and it's been a long time since I've been forced to format a hard drive to get rid of it.

Yeah, in my case we're talking rootkits. I've had a couple in the last few months. It's a work laptop so I can't be as vigilant as with my own. With my own computer I know my registry inside out and every single process that should be running, so its easy to spot an intruder. That said I generally keep mine isolated from the net - best AV solution going! I use my work computer on the frontlines because its not my problem if she goes down! The IT department has my laptop so filled with crap there's no way of knowing what's legitimate software or not. I think this one got in masquerading as a mcafee update. Frankly the malware causes less problems than the IT's weekly botched updates! Why is it anathema to hire an actual computer guru to an IT department?

I actually had that once. It's good to know I don't have to reinstall, if it happens again, which I did.

Hello, guys. I'm also having the same problem with AdMedia. But the virus manifests itself only in Google Chrome (Firefox and IE are ok). I tried to trace the virus through Malwarebytes, but it was not identified. I also reinstalled Google Chrome... not resolved. Anyone knows how can I get rid of the virus? By the way: @ugafan, how did you get rid of AdMedia?

Thanks!

i did a system restore to an earlier date.

i did a system restore to an earlier date.

I tried system restore, but the problem with AdMedia. dates prior to the last available date to restore. Now what can I do?

EDIT:

When I click the annoying AdMedia. spam, I am led to Intextual site (http://intextual.com/index.php). Do you think I should contact them and ask for help with this issue? They clearly recognize the existence of AdMedia.

Don't contact anyone. Did you update Malwarebytes?

I'd suggest downloading and running the following scanners (free versions):
Dr.Web CureIt: http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en
Spybot Search and Destory: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Super Antispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

Update each one before scanning. Also try running a full Malwarebytes scan.

This isn't a malware removal forum, so if the above doesn't work then I'd suggest signing up at a forum that provides a guided malware removal service (they don't charge, you just need to follow their instructions and upload logs). I'd suggest:

Malwarebytes Malware Removal forum: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showforum=7
Major Geeks Malware Removal forum: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

They will probably initially ask you to perform the same scans as I suggested, and then move on to more complex solutions which I can't suggest as they are to be supervised and performed in a safe manner.
