adjusting file setting in camera or in post?

I just got the DVX100A, and I was wondering which was better..to set all my file settings to 0, and have more flexibility to get the look I want when I edit (I use Prem. Pro 1.5-with magic bullet), or is there an advantage (better quality, etc) to adusting the settings on the camera, and actually shoot with the look I think I want? I will be shooting primarily in 24p f6 scene file setting.
Any advice from you veteran DVX'ers would be appreciated.
Thanks,
tckyd

PS. Barry, I got your book. It's really helping with the learning curve. Thanks.

Learn the camera settings, it will take time though.

Only rely on post to fix things that you can't shoot quite like you want.
There's far to great a reliance on "fixing" in post on these forums, sadly a sign of the times I suppose....laziness....or inexperience.

Optical shoots are always going to look better than post.

I would vote for trying to get the look you want in-camera. Of course, since you've already got the DVD you've seen the "magical projectile" scene, so you know that an absolutely incredible range of looks can be created in-camera. It takes a little time and a field monitor to do it properly though.

In my limited experience, you can do a lot in post, but fixes there are extremely time-consuming and often frustrating, whereas having your shot about 90% to perfect in camera is a blessing. An extra 1/2 hour to hour in the field getting your settings right probably equals 20 hours of hair-pulling, profanity-uttering post work, trying to repair the look of a shot. I had heard this on this forum, but now I finally believe it.

Listen guys, nothing aggainst what has been said. But it's a style, nothing else. A lot of people like to shoot straight and build the look in post. some people do that incredibly well, either. The secret is not getting lost in the middle. If you shoot plain (and there are rules for that) you can get amazing things in post that you could not even dream of achieving on camera, like some filters, and a nice color corrector/telecine.

Now I do think being able to shoot close to what you want is better, because you don't get lost in post (trying whatever fits better), and because, well, for me, it kind of makes me think more about what I'm doing in terms of concept.

But the post option is a very viable option, for the ones that work better that way.

If doing the look in camera, don't neglect the use of filters as well.
