adjusting dialogue in CS4 for "phone" sound

Hi all,

What are the most tried and true methods of altering straight recorded dialogue so that it sounds like you're listening to it over a phone or answering machine? I'm sure I could experiment with EQ and reverb to get just the right sound, but if someone already has a great method, I'd love to hear it. Thanks very much in advance. I'm using CS4, if that has any bearing.

Have you tried to process the sound with a bandpass filter with low cutoff of 400 Hz, and high cutoff of 3000 Hz, with perhaps some 'eq' to emphasize the 'high end'.

You may also want to record some 'hiss' from a 'real phone' and add that into the mix.

Alternatively, play your recorded 'normal dialog' through a 'real' phone pair and record the receiver side audio...
