adding gunshots in post

ignoring the possible issue of gun recoil and similar physical movement of the gun and firer, adding muzzle flash and smoke is pretty easy in most cases - check out http://www.detonationfilms.com/missionstatement.htm for muzzle fashes and explosions etc, including some free stuff. You just need some basic compositing knowledge to add them to your live footage.

Depending on the film, you could go even more low-tech - for the film Aliens, most of the muzzle flashes are just single white frames inserted into the video

Or you can get into the thrilling world of particle simulation - something like Particle Illusion http://www.wondertouch.com/ is actually very easy to use and lets you endlessly customise the effects

I'd recommend FXHome's products (I use VisionLab myself). Unlike Wondertouch's stuff, there isn't Product Activation, plus they do more kinds of effects than just particles -- the greenscreen compositing engine is fantastic.
