Adding Camera Shake in Post

Is there a way to take locked down footage from a tripod and add some movement in FCP to simulate a handheld look (but with a fairly steady hand)?

So far, all I have found is the "earthquake" effect which doesn't cut it, or going in and manually creating movement keyframes which is incredibly painstaking. I am sure there has to be a feature, given that this is kind of a theoretical variation of the earthquake effect.

The CameraShake node in Shake does a very nice job. Keep in mind that you will have to deal with some blank areas around the edge of your image when the image moves. This can be addressed by slightly scaling up your image as needed, or you may discover that the edges are not apparent because they are outside of the image safe area.

In After Effects - blow up your image 105% to 110% (depends really) with the scale option.

Then, option + click on the stopwatch icon for the position property, that will bust open your expression editor for the position property.

in the expression editor area, simply type:

wiggle(2,20);

That is wiggle(speed of wiggle, amplitude of wiggle)

I find (2,20) to be really good, but sometimes depending on the focal length (a wide angle lens would have less shake than a long lens, etc) you may want to go to like wiggle(1.2, 10).

Play around with it. This is approximately the equivalent of using the camerashake node in shake... but for those who have after effects!

I do this all the time to VFX shots on handheld projects. It a) really helps cover up the VFX b) matches the mood of the piece.

I did something that gave a very natural result in FCP. I shot a green dot against a wall hand held, trying to keep it steady as best as I could. I tracked the dot using the LyricMedia Tracking plugin and then applied the tracking info to my locked off shot, scaling up the image a bit. Worked great. You could also do this with the AE motion tracker.

Thanks from me, too! The thread is about a year old, but "search" saved me. Just what I was looking for!
