Adding a subwoofer to powered monitors

Hello Listers,

I purchased a new JBL studio monitor kit which included two active 8" monitors and a 10" active sub-woofer. The 10" sub-woofer is designed to pass each of the stereo signals through to the other two monitors. I assume this is normal in order to filter the low frequencies.

Included in my monitor kit, I got a Presonus Monitor Controller V2 as a throw-in which I am now imagining the possibilities. At times, when working late, I would prefer to not use the sub-woofer and avoid disturbing wifey with the low end thump.

Now the question:

As an alternative to the standard through the sub-woofer to monitor hookup, what would be the effect of running the desk monitors and sub-woofer separately through the controller so I could easily eliminate the sub when not wanted.

Obviously, whatever filtering the sub provided would be gone so the monitors would still be carrying the lower frequencies. So in practice, would this make squat for difference? In this case, I don't know how much I don't know.

TIA

Thanks Richard,

I knew that it was physically possible. Actually I was thinking more about the audio and how it might effect things.
