adding 2:3 pulldown on PB that doesn't support RT 2:3 pulldown

i've done several searches on this forum (and others) and have found answers to variations on my question, but can't seem to find the answer i need.

i shot 24pa, captured removing 2:3:3:2 pulldown, edited 23.98, outputed on dvd, and everything is fine. except now i need a miniDV copy, and the only RT pulldown playback for print to tape that my set up supports (tibook 867mhz, 1GB RAM, FCP HD) is a 2:2:2:4 pulldown playback (to my understanding, the worst of the pulldowns). is there a way i can make a miniDV copy with 2:3:2:3 pulldown? i feel like the answer should be very simple - i don't need RT; rendering something out would be fine - but from what i can gather is it's either RT or nothing. please help as this is for a festival screening. thanks!

Try opening in Cinema Tools. Use conform and set to 29.97
Now you can create a 29.97 sequence in FCP and add that.
(I don't use this method so I'm not sure it does the right thing (add pulldown))
Other option is After Effects or Commotion to add pulldown back to create a true 29.97 clip from 23.98 source.

If you use conform in Cinema Tools it'll simply put the frame rate to 29.97 which will speed the clip up. In the system settings of FCP you can select a pulldown pattern (under the "playback" tab). Select 2:3:2:3 there, open a 29.97 sequence and throw your clip in there. A little rendering later you have a pulldown on the clip and can print it to video.

Hm, I thought it did. I recently removed the pulldown from a DVX clip and threw it in a 29.97 timeline and looked exactly like the original. But if it doesn't, taking it into After Effects is the only other idea i have ...

Or, use the Standards Conversion plugin I wrote, which will add real 3:2 pulldown to your clip as a render, so you don't have to do it in real time, and hence can use it on even a slow mac. There's a free demo at www.nattress.com

for the purposes of adding 3:2 pulldown, this plug-in essentially compensates for slower macs? meaning, if i did have a more powerful mac, i wouldnt' need this plug-in?

i guess i just don't understand why FCP HD can't create a non RT 3:2 pulldown for slower macs. for example, there are plenty of effects that i would have to render that more powerful macs can handle RT. why not the same for pulldowns?

as for after effects, when i dropped a 23.98 clip into a 29.97 timeline, it also wants to generate a 2:2:2:4 pulldown. i'm not that familiar with that program, but i assume i would need a similar plug-in to get a 3:2 pulldown.

because this is the only case where i'll need to create a 3:2 pulldown copy of this project, i'm reluctant to shell-out the $100.

I fully understand. It's just a limitation on how FCP works, in that Apple only implemented addition of pulldown as a play-out effect.

If you have AE, drop the 23.98fps clip into a 23.98fps project. Now go to the export panel, and set the addition of 3:2 pulldown in the export. It's all outlined in the manual.

thanks for the response. unfortunately i just tried that, and it outputted a 2:2:2:4 pulldown, which was what i was getting in FCP HD. it is surprising that apple didn't think to include a 3:2 pulldown 'effect' for us on the slower macs, especially with the popularity of 24p cameras. i guess they want us to upgrade our old machines. what are the specs needed, by the way, to create RT 3:2 pulldown? maybe this is the excuse i need to upgrade...

as for my current situation, outside of getting on a more powerful mac (can't think of anyone i know...), would i be better off with a 2:2:2:4 mini-DV copy (outputed straight from the timeline) or output from my 24p dvd to my miniDV deck (having the dvd player handle the 3:2 pulldown)? i know the dvd is of lesser visual quality than what would come off my timeline, but wouldn't that be better than the slight stutter of the 2:2:2:4 pulldown?

AE does work for this, and as far as I know, AE has no option other than adding real 3:2 pulldown on a output back to disk.

It's not that Apple want you to upgrade, but slower machines don't have the horse power to add it in real time, and Apple never built a plugin for a render effect, hence I did to fill that market niche.

seems strange that you can't just drop a 23.98 clip into a 29.97 timeline and have it be conformed it worked that way in fc 3 which doesn't officially support 24p. If you have a copy of fc3 try that.

It's never worked like that, in any FCP. FCP only ever adds frames, never fields, and never 3:2 pulldown when you put a 23.98fps clip on a 29.97fps timeline. If FCP had done this, I would not have taken the time to write a plugin to do so.

It's amazing how many people can't see the effect of simply exporting 23.98 footage to 29.97 from FCP or QT. It will look stutery because its doubling up frames. I used to use Shake to add the proper pulldown before I upgraded to a G5. Graeme's plugin is only $100 bucks, which is a much cheaper alternative if you don't have Shake or AE.
