I just picked up a couple used 2k Mole 412s and didnt realize they have special plug. I searched Mole and couldn't find a Bates to household adapter. Is this what I need? Anyone have a part number? What do they cost?
The stage pin bate connector is still 120v with 2 wires and a ground. You can just go to home depot and get some edison plugs and replace them. All you should need is a phillips screwdriver and possibly some wire strippers. With 2k's always make sure you're in a dedicated plug. They pull around 18 amps, and most houshold plugs these days are 20 amps for several plugs. 2k's pop a lot of breakers.
Good luck with the breakers, I have 2 mighty moles and yes, they pull 18amps. Most breakers in the homes I have shot in are 15 amp and will sometimes work for a little while if they are new. IF the breakers are 20 , and older they heat up and pop. You can however use 1k watt globes and then n.p.
Thanks guys. I will get on that. As for the powering, and I know there's another thread about generators, do you have any generator recommendations for a couple 2ks and a 5k? I dont want a big, nasty, expensive quiet studio type, but maybe a construction rental type.
Yeah, generators on another thread. Also, look into the possibility of getting 1k bulbs for your 2k fixtures. With the Dvx's sensitivity to light, the 1k is the new 2k. I find that most of the time a 2k is overkill unless I'm gelling it or bouncing it.
Thats a lot of juice..almost 10k. There is a thread with my and other suggestions on the new inverter Hondas and you can tie a couple together.
FYI, I am working on a project right now that will convert my 2k Mighty Moles like yours to Metal Halide instruments with ballasts. I will post something and probably put pics in DIY in a couple weeks. I am currently waiting for a test globe 1 k metal halide to arrive and have located a proper electronic ballast for it. This is a "plug and play" situation the globe is an rx7s double ended type just like the 2k globe you have now. You plug the mole in the ballast and you are off to 80,000 lumens 65 CRTI and 5200 degrees of light at 8 amps. All this for what is the cost of a two day rental of an HMI where I live ($500)Will keep you posted.
I saw and read the other thread, it's just not clear to me. Will I need a 10k+ generator for this setup? Would you recommend a couple 7ks instead of one big one?
I suppose I could ask over there if you guys aren't sure.
I wouldsuggest you go for a minimum of one third more power from the gen set than you know you will require. YOu should also take into consideration anything else that might be plugged in on site as well as the lighting gear.A 10 k generator is not goign to be enough for 9k worth of lighting. You need to consider that you will have sound from the Genny unless it is super well blimped and you will need feed cable to get the power to your lights. Though HMI's are expensive , theydraw considerably less current and might be a cheaper and more effecient choice with a smaller generator. Lots of "this and that " in this response I know..
The other thing to consider is distribution. 2k's are 120v, 5k's are 220, usually with a bates plugs. I've seen Honda generators with bates 220 connectors, but I I think these were customized for film work. The post above was true, you need a bigger generator than the sum of your lighting amps. In other words, a 5k generator will not reliably run a 5k light. I'd get at least a 10k to run a 5k with. Construction Rental gennys are around 200 amps, I'd just look into one of those, but pay attention to the connections. They can have all the power you need, but if you can't plug into them they won't do you much good.
