AD MixPre vs Rolls MX422

I guess I asked too much in one block for people to process it. So I'll try to stick to just one question in a thread.

I have to pick out a field mixer for HDV Feature Production.

I'm considering

a) the three input Sound Devices MixPre for $655
b) the 4 input Rolls mx422 for $500.

I know the SD is the "standard", but does anyone have anything bad to say about the performance of the Rolls?

Is this a no-brainer one way or the other? Ie "they both sound great, its a no brainer to save $150 and get the rolls" or "the rolls is crap, its a no brainer to spend the $150 and get the SD".

Thanks guys.

With the Sound Devices, you can't go wrong with. I have also heard some good things about the Rolls.
To further confuse you, I purchased the PSC Promix 3, which I have been more than happy with. The decision to pick the PSC up was price, performance, features (had most of the features I wanted ie. light weight, small, good built in limiters and pre amps, bright and accurate level meters, tape camera monitoring return and more).

The Sound Devices is great and an industry standard, but is a bit pricey for me, and I was not a fan of the Rolls non Led level meters.

The Mixpre (which I assume is what you are referencing) is 2 input but it is still a no-brainer: Rolls is crap pure and simple. It sounds like crap, it's features & design are crap, and it is as built like crap.

If you insist on staying around the $500 range and know you will need 3 inputs I would suggest you get a used Shure fp33. It's not as good as the SD but way better then the Rolls.

Cheers

The Rolls units aren't great, that's for sure. But for someone on a TIGHT TIGHT budget, something like a MX54s 3 channel unit isn't "half bad". Certainly worth the money.
But it is $119. I certainly wouldn't spend $500 on a Rolls product.
