Actually writing a screenplay

I wrote my first screenplay earlier this year. It wasn't monumental but it was a start. It was 15 pages and ended up turning into a 30 minute movie. I used a site called plot bot because it formatted everything for me and seemed like an easy way to write it. I was actually pretty pleased with it... ANYWAYYYY i was curious as to methods that are excepted in screenplays writing. I know there are other programs out there that you can write them on. Is this the way people do it? Any help at all is welcome.

There are lots of programs... I'm not sure of all of them because I generally use Microsoft Word. You can format as you go and it "remembers" the formats if you want to apply them to groups of words.

It works great for me!

Celtx is free and excellent. Otherwise, Final Draft is the industry standard. Movie Magic Screenwriter is also reportedly excellent.

I'm cowriting a screenplay right now on MS Word with a screenplay template and find a huge PITA. Celtx would have been vastly better, but the original writer was unaware of it when he started.

I assume you're not asking about "programs" that actually try to help you with the content, right? Don't know anything about those, although I'd imagine they exist.

Industry Standards...

Movie Magic Screenwriter
Final Draft

Another one a bunch of people like...
Celtx

The actual details...

Some people consider Final Draft THE industry standard. The rest of us KNOW Movie Magic Screenwriter is the industry standard.

FD is perfectly capable. Although, sometimes when I have to mess around with the format to allow for overlapping dialogue, I want to try out MMScreenwriter...

well, to be on the safe side, write your script using a program like FD or MMSW. There are a slew of other programs out there too. best way to find out about them is to do some search on google. but, if you're looking into investing into a software package, FD all the way.

i'm just re-iterating what everyone else has said in this thread so far.
