The subject popped into my head, and I’m now on a bit of an OCD trivia-hunt...
I thought I had several examples, but it seems that a little IMDBeing has simply betrayed my ignorance and/or forgetfulness...
For the purposes of this ‘survey’, the actor/director must have made ONE – and only ONE – feature film (theatre/TV/shorts credits may be ignored), and that film must be considered – at least by you, or by any significant portion of the public – as very good/great/brilliant.
If the director is still alive today, at least a decade must have passed since the making of the film, in order for it to be considered.
Some potential candidates, in my mind, had been: Robert De Niro for A BRONX TALE (1993); Steve Buschemi for TREES LOUNGE (1996); Stanley Tucci for BIG NIGHT (1996) – but it turns out they have all directed features since, that I had either forgotten or didn’t know about.
Although I love Larry David’s SOUR GRAPES (1998), and laugh like hell whenever I watch it, I wouldn’t consider it a Great Film, nor do I consider LD as, primarily, an actor.
----
So…
The only two pictures/directors I can summon, that fulfil my exacting criteria are:
Charles Laughton – NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)
Gary Oldman – NIL BY MOUTH (1997)
And they are both, IMO, bona fide classics that would feature – easily – in my all-time top 20.
----
I’d love to hear anyone else’s suggestions for films that either (a) meet the full criteria, or (b) narrowly miss, but are worth mentioning anyway.
Cheers,
DP
