Actors' White Teeth

Do television make-up departments have a quick, temporary treatment to whiten all of the actors' teeth?

On a Seinfield rerun, I finally noticed that when Elaine smiled widely, her back teeth weren't as white as her front. As the episode wore on I paid attention to the teeth of other actors. A guest actress was the same way: very white front teeth but back teeth less white, only visible when she smiled big. I couldn't see the back teeth of Jerry or George, but their front teeth were every bit as white as Elaine's and the other actress's.

I'm just curious. I've always known that actors had super-white teeth, and I assumed they used teeth whitening chemicals a lot or had dropped a ton of money on dental veneers. But now I don't know, for a couple of reasons.

1. Teeth whitening. Okay, let's say it's the use of teeth whitening chemicals. Well, my teeth are never that white, even after a professional cleaning. However, I don't normally use whitening toothpaste nor have I paid for a professional whitening treatment at the dentist's office, because I've heard that whitening is abrasive. Even so, I'm not sure the people I know who have had their teeth whitened have teeth as white as I've seen on the screen. A few weeks ago I watched The Count of Monte Cristo, and teeth of the main actress, Dagmara Dominczyk, are just ridiculously white.

2. Dental veneers. Many celebrities get veneers, but I'm not sure that's what's going on with Seinfield either. How could this bit-part guest actress afford veneers? Julia Louis-Dreyfus could, but it seems she would get all of them done, so that when she smiles big there's not this noticeable back tooth that's darker. Plus, how do veneers stay white any longer than normal teeth? It seems to me that soon they would start to stain from coffee and stuff, just like regular teeth. I myself would get veneers only as a last resort, even if I was a multimillion-dollar celebrity, because the dentist first irreversibly files down your teeth and bonds these things to them. I would do it only if my teeth were also too crooked or something.

But all these actors' front teeth were really white --- and uniformly so, as if they all got the same treatment. So this got me wondering if right before each episode the make-up department has some kind of quick-and-dirty way (no pun intended) of whitening up all the talent's teeth. Stickers? Paint? Some temporary veneer-like plastic pieces that can be safely removed afterward? I don't know, I'm just throwing things out there.

Edit:

Maybe I should have searched for a still from the show before posting. In all of the ones of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, her back teeth are white too. Here is the closest example I could find. Julia's all look white, but the two backmost visible teeth on the other actress look like they might be less white. I don't know, it looks a little bit more than just a result of them being in deeper shadow. Plus, when I was watching the episode, it was even more noticeable. I mean, I wasn't even looking for it at first, and it jumped out at me.

20-odd years around union makeup artists on TV shows, never once heard anything about teeth whitening in the trailer. Could be some deep dark secret though!

I remember reading some "news" article, back around 1980, saying that some young adults (maybe Donny and Marie?) getting started in show business, were having all their visible teeth capped. And yeah, I've noticed that show-biz folks do seem to have impossibly white teeth.

I'm derailing here but I'm more put off by the de-coloration of lips on mail actors. I swear it's a thing. Watch Supernatural and notice how the leads' lips are the same color as the skin on the rest of their faces. It's weird.

One thing that I've noticed for many years is actors almost always have bright white teeth. And it doesn't always fit the role.

The old rough dirt cowboy gunslinger in 1800s smiles and has a mouth full of perfect pearly whites. The old hobo grins and he's got a grill of gleaming teeth.

Maybe it's just one of those things you do as an aspiring actor? Like getting headshots?

As for the lips, yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Though that's a heavily photoshopped piece of promo material from the look of it. You gotta see the show in action to really appreciate it. Here's a lead:

Hell, it could just the aggressive grading. I have a digital makeup plugin that will do the same things if you're too generous with it. And high budgeted network show is definitely using a a $99 digital makeup suite just like I am. Yup.

I also remember it being really bad in Boondock Saints.

Maybe it's just the lighting? Maybe the white doesn't look so white in the back of the actor's mouth since it's more shaded? They're not as front lit as a newscaster might be.

When I was shooting fashion, all of the younger women models had incredibly white- "glow in the dark" white- teeth.

There are all kinds of bleaching tools available . Either over the counter, use at home, or some dentists do it professionally.

I asked my more "holistic" dentist if he did it. He said just buy an over the counter kit, but he didn't recommend it. He did say avoiding coffee was a big help.

The treatments use a plastic cup that goes over the upper and lower teeth. The way it is configured, the teeth in front tend to get bleached more than the he back teeth. Or insides of teeth.

I've seen the teeth thing as well. It is very noticeable. The molars are yellow and the front teeth are white. I've seen it on several actors on different shows. I think it is caps. If it were teeth cleaning, all the teeth would be the same color. But I think they want great looking teeth and so they get the caps on the front. They probably match when they first get them (after a teeth cleaning), but then maybe they don't keep up with the teeth cleaning and then the caps stay white while the back teeth yellow.

Its so noticeable, you think someone would take care of it.

I don't have experience with actors [well, the industry either :P] but I will say that I've used those white strips for my own teeth in the past [they do work over several weeks/months!] But the strips only cover the teeth mentioned here. They don't reach around to the back half. So My front-er teeth are a bit more white than the back.

Not sure if that 's what's going on here, but from personal experience those white strips will have that exact effect on teeth

The teeth in the back generally look less white because they catch less light.

Like I said:

it looks a little bit more than just a result of them being in deeper shadow.

The teeth were noticeably yellower. I'm sorry I couldn't find a better screen grab. They have to be smiling big and the back teeth need to be caught in the light. It seldom happens, but like I said, when it did, it really jumped out at me. I wasn't looking for it. I was just watching the show.
