Active Protagonist

Office Space took this ball and ran pretty far with it. It depends on what you mean by hypnotized. There's a pretty wide gap between the Hollywood idea of hypnotization and real hypnotization. I wouldn't make my protagonist a living zombie.

I'm thinking of using it as a device to get my character off his ass and commit to the journey.... To temporarily over come his fear, which off course falls apart later

Liar, liar used the birthday wish, but yes, Jim Carey didn't ask to be changed, to be truthful and honest. It was forced upon him by his son in a way.

It depends, if the device is used as the Inciting Incident, you're character still has to make an active decision based on this experience which drives him into the 2nd act.
If this is the case he can still be considered an active protagonist.

Very true, if it's the inciding incident I see how that would work.... I.e in liar, liar the wish upon him that made him incapable of lying.....
