Just bought Andrew Kramer's AME pack and had some fun with it using an HVX200 and my two suitemates.

Encoding is pretty crappy because I still don't know how to export my movies from Avid for use as streaming on the internet (anybody have tips?).

Also, I shot the footage wrong and had to do a frame pulldown, so some of the muzzle flashes are missing, oh well.

What do you guys think? Andrew Kramer's stuff is really powerful! I can't wait to use this in a real film.

I used Adobe After Effects CS3. You could pull this off in older versions though. All it takes is some blending modes and some rotoscoping.

Its a very good start. I think just a few more touches would make this really pop. The blood looks a little too saturated, little too red in comparision with the rest of the footage. And I think the biggest thing that would help sell the effect is light spill on the environment. Try creating an adjustment layer and messing around with color correction to make stuff look like light is shining on it. And then mask that layer to only show on objects close to the firing gun.

Andrew Kramer has a really good tutorial on this. It helped me a ton and I think that little big could add a lot.

This is what I was talking about.

I know about that tutorial, and I think it's cool and all, but I've shot weapons before and, at least in my experience, they really don't generate light, so adding simulated lighting would make it seem fake to me. Its a personal preference I guess.

I agree with what you said about the saturation of the blood. I used the darkest blending modes I could find, but I guess I'll try adjusting them to darken it up a bit more. Thanks for the feedback.

hah, i completely missed the shot at first because i recognized the building (Nassau/Suffolk huh? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG))

nice start, i agree on the saturation note...also, experiment with [subtle] grain effects to try and match the ultra-smoothness of the AME blood to the rest of the footage. it may not work all the time or ever, but depending on the project/shot/look youre going for, it may.

Nassau ftw :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) are you an alumni or fellow student? Haha, small world.

I like the idea of using the grain effects; that hadn't occurred to me, great idea! I will try that out the next time I use these effects (in a few weeks for an HFC shoot).

alum...B.A. TV

+ play with the grain..make sure its subtle (you basically want just enough to match the rest of the footage...you dont want obvious bloches of a different texture in your image)...consider the lighting of the environment and what effect it would have on the blood if there was actual blood on the walls.
