Achromat-to-camcorder distance?

Another newbie question, but I think this one is important:

I am using a Letus-mini adapter with my Canon HFS200. Everything works as expected, except:

If I zoom the camcorder fully out (wide) I get what I assume is normal, a very small image. One has to (again, probably normal) zoom-in about 1/3 to fill the screen.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM:

This means that my minimum aperture on the camcorder is only 2.4, instead of the 1.8 I could set if fully zoomed-out. Granted, using 2.4 or even higher would give me a sharper image, but I shoot all my footage in low-ish light (footage of my band playing in bars.) so what I need more than ultimate sharpness is LIGHT.

HERE'S THE QUESTION:

After I've zoomed-in enough to fill the frame, and focused dead-on to the GG, there is a bit of "closer" leeway left in the focus mechanism. So,

Why the heck isn't the achromat closer to the camcorder lens? Assuming I could still focus properly (which seems likely) wouldn't this let me zoom-out more, giving the option of a lower aperture?

I'm actually considering grinding-down my camcorder mount. Would this somehow mess up the relationship between the achromat & the condenser?
