Achieving this effect (Usher Climax)

At the bridge sequence (starts about 2:50 ends at 3:20) theres a scene of Usher with a lot of flashes on the screen. I want to achieve such effects. Do you know whta plugin they may have used or how it was done? Was it done in AE? Thanks for any help

You can probably achieve this effect pretty easily using optical flares

To me the sequence is gimicky... but, it could be done very simply, with practical lghts just outside of the frame, shining directly at the lens and so the lens would pick up flare.

Post process one would have to work a bit with AE to get a 'lens flare', which may take more time and tedium, than just doing it practically... one would have to rehearse the sequence to get the lights correctly placed and the motion right...
