Accidentally Erased Files

I’ve just accidentally erased a folder with about 40 gigs of captured video. I haven’t attempted to restore anything, since the freeware undelete program I used to scan the drive (handyrecovery) indicated that some of the larger AVI files have no value.

What are my options? Nothing has been written to this drive since the folder was erased. Should I be using a different recovery program? If I recapture the video and give it the same file name, will my old .prproj file use it correctly?

If you recapture the video, and assign it the identical file names and pathways, and each clip matches the deleted version, then yes, the old .proj file oughtta work just fine.

If you still have the prproj file, this is no problem - your premiere project file has in and out points for all of those video files saved. all you have to do is select one or more clips in your project window, right click, and do a "Batch Capture". You'll have to put in the proper tape, but after that it'll do everything automatically.

If I don't have enough room to keep backups of an entire project folder, sometimes I'll just back up the prproj, titles, etc, everything except the renders and captured footage since I can regenerate that stuff in the unlikely event of data loss.

Oh, one more thing: if you didn't give your tapes descriptive names while you were capturing, you'll probably have to select and batch capture clips one at a time (since you can probably figure out which tape each individual clip is on).
