accessory advice needed

Just about to buy my first dvx100a...just want to double check some things out with you pros.

1)Is the panasonic mic the best for the cheapest price? I haven't really seen any comments for or against it

2) How useful is getting a uv filter, in terms of protecting the lens? I film snowboard videos and I've never had a problem wiping snow off the lenses of my consumer cameras...I want to protect the cam but I'm just wondering if I need to go that far. would a $15 do the job?
3) anyone used the petrol rain cover (prc-dvx)? How does it compare to the kata one?
4) which tapes to use??? I obviously want to avoid dropouts!

I think that's all for now! Just ordered my manfrotto 510/755b tripod :D ..... can't wait for christmas!

Re: accessory advice needed

The Panasonic "shotgun" is not a good option. A good reasonably-priced shotgun would be the AT897. Someone is selling one in the Marketplace for $200--a great deal if it's still available. You're joking about the UV filter, right? If you damage the front element of the lens, you're looking at a $900 repair job--the entire lens assembly must be replaced. A cheap crappy UV filter will degrade the image of your $3400 camera. So spend the $35 and get a good Hoya multicoated UV filter. You can search and find the discussions on rain covers. The tape of chice is the Panasonic DVM63MQ.

Re: accessory advice needed

Shooting withouta UV filter is like having unprotected sex. It might be fine, but if it ain't, there's a hell of a price to pay.

Nice euphemism!

Re: accessory advice needed

Thanks for all the suggestions, that filter analogy put it into perspective for me!

I checked out 2filter.com and they look good. Has anyone ordered from them before?

One more question: regarding the shotgun mic....I can get the panasonic mic for $120 as a deal when i buy the dvx. Are there any better mics for that cheap or is the panasonic 'not bad' for that price? Just had a look at evs and the at897 is 279$ :-/ Is the difference between that mic and the panasonic great enough that you would advise me to hold off and buy the mic separately a little later?

oh, and does the at897 easily fit with the dvx? it looks a little thin....(I know this is a suuuuuuuuuuuuper noob question :-[ )

Dude, get the UV filter. You already spent $3500 on the camera. An extra $40-80 bucks on a good UV filter isn't a bad investment. After all, this is no where near considered a "consumer" camera. Treat it like it's your baby...

Alot of people here recommend the Panasonic PQs/MQs. But then I see other people reporting they have to clean their heads after 6-12 hours. I have shot 23 hours so far. But I use Sony Premiums without any problems. However, I do not play back or rewind through the camera and I never re-record over spots unless I need to backtrack and continue some time code. Once in awhile I use the Sony Excellence or Professional.

The AT897 is a great mic, and we are bundling it with a Sennheiser shock mount and a free Rt angle cable for the same price for DVXusers.  But by all means, there are cheaper mics that are still better than the Panasonic mic.  Here is one: http://www.evsonline.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=SGM1X (DVxusers get $8 off)

EDIT: The AT897 fits perfect into the DVX mic holder, not too skinny, and should be used with a shockmount if you are going to use a large windscreen. Both AT897 and SGM1X come with free windscreen and shockmount.

Re: accessory advice needed

RUSH: I went to your site but I didn't see a specific package for the AT897 with Sennheiser shockmount and free Rt angle cable. Can I order this package online and still get the DVX discount? Thanks.
