Acceptable Graphics Card

I need advice regarding a graphics card.

I am in the process of ordering a new computer that will have an Intel Quadcore I7/950 CPU and 12 Gigs of RAM. I will primarily use the machine for video editing - ultimately HD, and hi- res Photoshop work. I will not be doing gaming nor 3D work. I currently use Vegas but may switch to Premiere at some point.

I am being told that I only need a very basic graphic card such as the Nvidia G8400 512MB or the Nvidia Geforce GTS 450 1024MB.

Is this correct? Should I consider a better graphics card or does it not really make a difference considering the type of work I will be doing?

Thanks,

Dan

Go with a minimum of 1024 MB. A lot of programs these days harness the GPU. Edius video editor is an example of one. A GFX card is relatively cheap. I use ATI 4000 and 5000 series cards with great result. If you are using Graphics programs like Photoshop, you will want the best card you can afford. If you are ditching Vegas for another NLE, I would go over to Grass Valley Edius. It is the best NLE program out there right now. This is what we use and absolutely love it.
