Academy Award Nominations - Thoughts?

I for one am happy that Crash got nominated. I know this movie polarizes people. But I was with it the whole way. And the movie it supposedly 'upset' in getting nominated, Walk The Line, was so incredibly average.

I was also very happy that Star Wars didn't get nominated for SFX. I know a lot of the effects were good, but even more were disgustingly transparent. The lizard that Obi-Wan rides, the constant obvious blue screen, the clone troopers, the bad CGI heads of real actors on sword dueling stunt doubles. Simple things like when Mace and Emperor are fighting and the window breaks. The lightsabre hits one small part of the window, and the entire thing shatters. Why would this movie be nominated when so many bad effects take you out of the film?

Umm "Why would this movie be nominated..."...

It wasn't.

I guess I should've mentioned that there's been a "minor uproar" about it not being nominated. A lot of people are crying conspiracy. So when I was asking "Why would it...?", I was referring to the people who thought it should be.

Glad to clear things up.

Ill stick to the Aussie nominations: Heath Ledger a worthy nomination. Russel Crowe being snubed for Cinderella man? Maybea result of his anticts, whats that got to do with his acting ability? Dion Beebe, the Brisbane-born cinematographer for his work on Memoirs of a Geisha - Great I hope he wins, he is really talented. A couple of Aussies nominated for make up on star wars ep 3 - I guess they did a great job, as no one has bagged the make up just the CGI.

Not to nitpick, but do you know that some types of glass (tempered?) will in fact shatter completely if you break one small part of it? :)
Otherwise I agree, CGI clone trooper heads, that lizzard and some more were not on par with the rest of the movie and shouldn't have made it's way into something that was in production for 3 years...

And btw there is another thread in Film Discussion forum on Academy nominations.

As far as I know the acadamy awards have nothing to do with acting or film making skill. Once you have a product that is suitable for a nomination you begin a campaign of marketing and parties to win the award.

Ever notice that the awards go to insane choices? Take a look at the history of the awards for best picture and look at what other films were made in the same year. It's amazing to see how ridiculous the choices are.

It's a fantastic marketing tool but it baffels me when real film makers show interest in them.

Yet another "which of us should we let win this time" awards "show".

Meaningless on TV.

Meaningless on this forum.
