I don't understand how you are going to capture it unless you know what it is? Do you have a HDV deck that does both 50 and 60? Wouldn't you have to know ahead of time if it's PAL or not? How do you know it's HDV and not DV?
At least once it's captured, FCP6 should adopt the format of the first clip you place on the timeline, but that still doesn't explain how you plan to capture it.

this is a client i've never worked with before.
i don't know what camera they used or framerate or anything.
all they told me was that the footage was hi-def.
i didn't ask enough questions.
i didin't realize there were so many hd settings to choose from.
i will talk to them tomorrow.

1080i60 vs 1080i50 is PAL vs NTSC, so where do live (or perhaps where do the clients live)?
If its on "miniDV" tapes, but its hi-def then perhaps you actually have HDV on your hands. If that's the case, you really might want to do some reading up on the use of the Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC). HDV in FCP doesn't always play nice if using the native HDV codec. So some people prefer to ingest the footage using the AIC instead for better performance. Good luck.

yes. i have rented an HDV deck just for this project. I am using firewire and have tried a lot of different capture settings and FCP wont even recognize the deck. I've tested the deck/connection with a regular mini dv tape and it is fine. Also I've used a monitor and know the the HDV footage is there on the tape i'm trying to capture... I'm very frustrated. the producers said the other editors are using AVID so i can't ask about capture settings and i'm waiting to hear back from the DP.
