I want to put a FCP5 system together for an inhouse editing rig for visiting guys ( recording studio with small edit room attatched)

could you guys help me spec the system out ?

Monitor, G5( ram vid card etc.) and external monitor....
any kinda special controller helpful-- jog wheel etc. plug ins ...?

I'd like to keep it at or near about 5-6k.

I've got heaps of FW 800 drives to get started with.

thanks !

Dual 2.7 Ghz G5, 2 gigs ram, stock video card is fine, 23" Cinema Display, Kona2 Card, External NTSC monitor and you should be good to go.

Firstly - STOP!

Apple is making a BIG announcement TOMORROW, it could well be a new line of Powermacs. See what they do and then reconsider. It may not be Powermacs though, so don't get too excited.

Until the announcement, the only thing I WILL say is save $50 to buy a new mouse. A mouse is such an important aspect to a computer - it is how you communicate your thoughts into the software - the one button Apple mouse is inefficient. Get a nice scroll wheel 5 button optical.

The other thing Apple offer (in the UK at least) is that on Wednesdays they sell off recond stock with full warranties over the web. Basically you save a few hundred notes for the slight risk of minor cosmetic damage. Worth a look!

Is it wrong to be aroused by this?

I dunno... Jarred's rig is such a killer deal. If I didn't have this dual 2.5 sitting under my desk I would grab it.

On a side note. Kai, do you really think Cinema HD display is the best thing you can get? I'm still on dual 19" HPs from my PC (that is now back to 21" CRT) and was gonna get Dell 24 this week. Beats Apple specs-wise, just doesn't have firewire ports (not that I lack 'em as it is) and costs 500$ less. Is it the calibration that makes Apple worth it?

It's a good fit for me. Mainly I got em cause they match the G5's ;) But, they are gorgeous and bright (and pretty accurate). You can get dual 20" apple cinema displays for basically the price of one 23". That's 40" of space for about 1500$. NICE.

Apple is overpriced...umm what else is new?

I agree with xl7 on this one - the apple cinema displays aren't really the best in their league - specially not for the cost - and you can't even adjust the screen height!?

I got the Dell 2005fpw with my g5, and its actually better + cheaper. I have more adjustability in my screen 3 yr warranty, no dead pixels, and this neat rotating screen that can rotate to a vertical screen for a refresher from the usual perspective - and yes you can match it on the G5 by swithching your display rotation. I'm probably going to get my second 20" soon - but right now its really not necessary.

so yea you can:

(A) get 2 20" apple cinema displays for basically the price of one 23"
(B) get 2 Dell 20" for the price of 1 Apple 20"
(C)get 2 Dell 24" for the price of one Apple 23"

... seriously why would you get 2 20" for the same price as 2 24" inches? With the Dell 20" for $390 and the Dell 24" for $780 - I personally don't think the price premium for Apple is worth it...I love Apple - but they have a tendency to exploit what is undeniably beautiful design for unjustifiable pricing.

Seriously if I wanted to match the admittedly beautiful silver frame of the G5 that bad I'd go to ACE, get some matte silver spray paint, tape off the lcd, plug the rear vents, and go to work, lol. Right there $10 custom solution.

This is just from my perspective as someone who could have dropped the dough on an apple screen - but really found I'd be better served by using the saved money for more important upgrades like memory, additional hard drives, wacom tablets, etc.
