About to buy a MBP... a couple questions.

I'm about to buy a MBP sometime this week, but I want to make sure I have the best setup for HD editing. I'm not very proficient with computer specs etc, so this help is much appreciated.

Is the 7200rpm harddrive absolutely necessary?
What does the glossy screen actually do? Won't it just reflect like crazy?
Anyone with experience with the 17'... is it a burden carrying that thing around? Is the extra screen space a big difference, or do you still use a secondary monitor?

Thanks again!

Since I have been renting out my tower setup to my dayjob I picked up the 17" with the 7200 drive, which I believe makes a difference. It is fantastic. The screen space in my opinion is a must, I can carry the macbook in my old laptop bag, so transportation is no differen't. It is great for doing finishing work with clients. So two thmbs up from this user.

DONT GET THE GLOSSY.....

Unless you like headaches.....or have a room with no light in it.

I have the 15" MBP with a matte screen, FCS2

Here's a shootout of the various MacBook Pro hard drives. I wouldn't consider this the end all answer, but just something to look over. The 4200's I believe use a new technoloy, something about vertical alignments. In theory its supposed to mean speeds fast enough to be in a 7200's league (but slower none the less), but way less battery drain. Haven't heard of many film editing folks using it and pushing it, so not sure what the real world quality of it is.

Shootout

Thanks for the advice...

That study was interesting. I'll be having an external no matter what for all my footage, so the harddrive won't likely reach full capacity. So i'm looking at the 7200 rpm harddrive with a 17' NO GLOSS :)

Thank god for that developers deal!

Color is really tricky to use on a laptop so if you want to do high end color correction consider a desktop machine.

I've been looking at the macbook pros too and one of the things I look forward to the most is learning the new Color program. Noah, what would be tricky about using it with a laptop?
