Don't smack me for asking a silly question, but......... What is the difference between a render and an export? Is the sequence rendered during an export?

Why would I want to render the footage before export/encode?

At what point should I render my footage ?

YES I SEARCHED

Render=creating video preview files in a lower quality format but allows you to see the edit in real time if you've applied any transition or effects. This should properly be called Preview Render.

Export=rendering the video out of Premiere.

So Exporting is Rendering, except you get to pick what codec you use (whereas in Preview Render it's defaulted to Microsoft Avi). You can choose to just use the preview file as your actual export (there's an option) but Microsoft Avi is uses such a crappy codec that it's not useful for anything other than preview.

Unless I'm mistaken, on a Mac the video previews are I-Frame Only MPEG, not AVI. You also have the option to set that at Maximum Bit Depth and Maximum Render Quality, which I've not done; not wanting to take a speed hit, so don't know how much of an improvement it would make.

Just throwing that out there because the OP didn't say which platform they're on.
