about audio equipment

Hey everyone,

I am a photographer entering the world of documentaries and short films; I will soon buy the dvx100a and would like to know what sound equipment would do well with it. I would appreciate any recommendations from anyone who knows and has experience with this camera.

I am looking for the best I can get for a moderate price, I would appreciate if any of you could let me know of several options I could choose from.

I will use the camera mostly for documentaries and some short films, also I would like to do some advertising commercials in the near future.

I would like quality sound for the interviews I am to do, and the dialog scenes in the short films.

Thanks a lot.

I would also use the "search" function up top, and type in one search for "boom poles" and another for "shock mounts".

Seeing as how this was your first post, welcome. You will find a ton of great information within these pages for everything that you could ever want to know about filmmaking, audio, and Coffee's latest obsessions.

That being said, your question has been asked and answered a lot for various budgets, projects, and initiatives. I would search through the pages in the audio forum and see what you come up with.

If you are looking for a more specific answer you will need to be more specific with your prior statement: budget, shooting locations, time frame, crew size, crew experience, personal experience, access to power supply, average wind speed, camera angles, ect.

Audio is actually very simple, it just has a lot of specifics that you need to identify.

Here is the best piece of advice I will give you (other than to search)...
Hire a professional to run your sound. It is the same price as renting for a shoot, you get an operator, and then you don't need to worry about sound quality!

are you one man band or do you intend to work with sound mixer ?
what is your budget , and what is moderate price:-)?

well, specifications are hard ..crew size? small, maybe up to 4 and sometimes 6 ...wind? I guess what I find in the moment I am shooting; I guess mostly indoor equipment would do me well, and something light to take outside, and if possible multi use, something that adapts to several situations, if thats possible. Budget, I wouldnt like it to pass the 1000$ to 1500 line, or if I can get good things for less, then better. Personal experience, I do advertising and fashion photography, I own a studio so I have space for the equipment I am to buy. More than brands, I am looking for specific equipment you can recommend me, something that has served you well personally; an example, what your perfect set of equipment would be in audio for these filming situations (an indoor interview, etc.), a list of that, or what you, yourself have and what you use it for, then i can do some research on that, and then buy it, otherwise the answers are practically the same as viewing the b&h catalog i have here in my desk, just brands but i dont know anything about those mics. I ve thought of renting, but I am in Venezuela and things are different here, a sound operator can charge up to 1000$ for a week, and its ok if i am doing publicity, because the client pays, but for my own projects I will do better if i just use that money in getting the equipment myself, i can use it more times ..and that way i also have some time to play around with it and learn to use it without paying someone something so exagerated, because at first in my documentaries i will make mistakes and it will take me time to fulfill my projects, and hiring a professional, any mistake delays the shoot and that is a ton of money less, that i can either save, or invest in something else. It would be quite stressful. I thought the same with the lighting equipment, but that cant be rented here either.

I did see through the boards before posting, that link that the first person that replied here posted was useful, but i wanted to hear what others would say in a less general manner.

Like, what would you use in audio, specifically for an interview with someone ...lavs? which ones? why? because i also keep hearing that some equipment doesnt go well with this camera, so i am scared to buy a few things, i just wanted to interact with other users of this cam that have more experience and see what they are using.

I also dont know how to be specific about the outdoor wind situation ..but i guess its quite windy here ..or i could get something that will work well in a pretty windy condition ..i could be ready for that kind of situation.

Thanks for the replies.
Manuel.

oh, and access to power, well, if indoors i can use the connections in the walls, otherwise, i think batteries lol :)

i think i am looking for a boom, and some attachable mics for the interviews, what would you say?

Your question has been answered a lot. If you just want to do interviews with one person get a sony lav mic from EVS for $200, that will save you from needing a boom or anything else, it comes with a cable that plugs right into the camera. If you're going to be doing more intensive interview stuff then please use the search. There are a ton of threads that make recommendations for decent mic kits that will work indoors. Seriously, just go through the first 20 pages of threads and you will find all the knowledge you seek.

i can suggest you will spend 1000 more and get you dissent eng package
used shur 33 mixerWENDT 3 , AT 4073 , oktava , K-TECK SOFTY with suspention , 2 PSC SUSPENTIONS , BOOM .2 HARD WERE LAVS ( emw from countryman)AND MAYBE ONE G-2 RADIOMIKE
that would bring you to optimum setup for small money
