Aaton's "Penelope" 3, 2 perf camera

Will any dvxers be attending IBC next month? I heard that Aaton's "Penelope" camera might be there (at least in proto form). I have been interested in this idea for its obvious cost savings and for the longer running loads / lighter weight advantages.

The ability to shoot both 3 and even 2 perf seems like a really great solution if your are already going to be using a DI in your workflow. How can you argue with up to a 50% reduction on film stock and processing costs?

Thanks for the link ropbo! This thing is gonna be way cool. Hope the rental houses jump all over it.

That'd be really great.

I'd also like to see more places doing 2-perf conversion. As far as I know there's only one place in Australia that offers that service (I'm kinda thinking about getting an old Konvas or Arri-2C and have it 2-perfed).

Yeah the Aussie's seem to be leading the reintroduction of 'Technicsope'. I have read that camera conversions are in the $6,000 range. Have you researched the costs yourself?

I think that this warrants a bit of research.

Yeah I talked to Bruce McNaughton at Arandafilm last year. He said the Konvas is not an easy camera to convert because of its internal design. You end up having to rebuild several parts. But he's done many of these cameras and the conversion goes for around US$5,000. Coverting the Arri II C is a bit cheaper, around US$3,500.

I don't know of anybody who used his services so I can't comment on the quality but anyway in case you are interested, there's some more info on his website:

I have used Bruce's services before but not for 2 perf. He rebuilt my Konvas recently and he does excellent work and within a timely manner too. I recommend any of his services to anyone.
