AAF and OMF export from Premiere to Audition... how is it supposed to work? (CS6)

I was checking out exporting a Premiere Sequence to OMF and AAF formats.

OMF
While the export did complete, the import to Audition had all the 'audio' clips mixed down to a single stereo pair. The sequence contained a number of 'nested' sequences, and none of the 'nested' audio was its own clip.

AAF
Not importable by Audition.

Now, I happened to try to export the Final Cut Pro OMF version of the project, and FCP 7 emitted errors because of the 'nesting'. I used the FCP XML export option to import to Premiere. The 'nesting' was retained by the XML export, as I was able to drill down through the nests in Premiere.

So, the question is... if one wants to perform audio operations on individual clips of audio, it would seem that one has to have all the audio clips on a timeline in a single Sequence, and that sequence exported as an OMF file.

Is OMF incapable of dealing with 'nests', or is it just the Premiere exporter that is limited.

Also, I was under the impression that AAF was the 'latest and greatest' for moving between programs... so, why would Audition not recognize or import an AAF file...

OK, I won't be much help, but a basic question:

Are you using the Premiere "Edit in Audition" commands on a clip or sequence?

I haven't even touched Audition yet, so I can't advise. Just trying to understand if you are using the built in relationship tools between the aps, or trying a more generic Export/Render and then separate Import?

It looks like if you use the Premiere "Edit" commands, you can edit the clips in Audition and the will replace the clips in your timeline, either at the Clip or Sequence level.

Sorry, not much help - just trying to understand your process first!

The reason this came up was to be able to transfer to 'a completely different environment', such as sending a project to FCP, or perhaps Pro-Tools, but since I don't have either, I was using Audition and Premiere to perform the export and import operations.

If it were the case that I simply wanted to move from Premiere to Audition, that would be done via the more tightly coupledness of Premiere and Audition...

For example, given a rather simplistic example, I was able to generate XML from Premiere that FCP 7 imported correctly, and likewise, FCP 7 XML export, imported to Premiere correctly. But that's for a 'video' project. The OMF/AAF package would be for audio processing.

And what I found was that FCP 7 doesn't export OMF for timelines that have nested sequences, whereas it seems that Premiere renders the sequence, to one video, and one stereo audio track... which doesn't work for a sequence that has audio clips that need individual work... well without cutting them in the DAW.

Ok, thanks! Now I get why you are looking at the pure "Export" options.

The Premiere help seems to indicate that it can export multiple mono tracks without flattening? I can't find the OMF page I was looking at; I think it wsa the "Separate Audio" option for larger projects? I'll have to go test.

Thanks for sharing! I'm trying to really commit to CS6 and learn the tools over the next 3-4 months. Cheers!

I exported a 6 stereo track Preimiere project as OMF with "Seperate Audio" as the option (I also used the Trim Clip option to export only teh portion I needed.)

When I went into Audition, I hightlighted teh clip sin teh Media Browser, then right cklicked to import the audio as 14 separate tracks (2 for the Master mix I think?) and selected "Import Into Multitrack" (other option was CD Layout).

Not sure if it would mix down the nested ones, or break them apart? Adobe supports OMF oficially only for Pro Tools, under help for that. But looks like it would work elsewhere.
