A workflow question regarding Premiere and After effects..

Just a question regarding workflow:

If I am working in a premiere timeline with a music video and I wanna add effects in AE and I bring the clip into AE. I add my effects and whatnot , am I supposed to render out and then re-import in premiere? I understand thats sounds simple BUT I was under the assumption that every time you render out, you compress and lose quality (which I do NOt want to do)

soooo... My question is, is there a way ( I have the Master collection ) to effect in AE and then somehow get it into premiere without rendering but the efefcts still take effect and I DONT lose quality??

I know its probably a simple answer but I just want to make sure I dont degrade my footage by continous rendering in my workflow..

any help would be appreciated.

I am working on a PC not btw.

Yes. You have to render because Premiere does not know the same things that AE does.

In order to preserve quality, render out uncompressed or with a lossless codec. I don't know if any are built in, but they aren't too hard to find. You only lose quality when you compress to a lossy codec, which is usually. Rendering itself doesn't have to be lossy.

The Master Collection is CS4 right? In that case you don't have to render in AE, just import the composition into Premiere ( File > Import After Effects Composition I think, I'm not at my editing rig). It's as easy as that unless Premiere doesn't recognize a filter you use. If that happens or it's an earlier version of Premiere, render in AE with uncompressed AVI (huge file size) or QT animation.

thanks fellas.. that gives me a starting point.. quick question to either of ya, rbrush if I render out using a QT animation , is that a lossless codec?? does AE have a codec built in thats lossless?

By the way, its CS3 master collection not cs4..

thanks again !

use QT with the animation codec with compression set to none and you should be golden.

it will bloat it up slightly from your compressed footage you shot.
IE I shoot 50 gigs of 720p footage to edit a music video. The dvcpro codec makes each take of the video (4:30 long) about 1.5 gigs
my edit when exported with the dvcpro codec, or raylight is about 1.5gigs too, when exported. When I export as QT with the animation codec and compression set to none, it becomes about 11 gigs because it is now 4:4:4 color and not 4:2:2 color and there is no compression from the codec.
I work on that in AE for compositing, keying and color correction and then render my final video out from there as a 1.5 gig dvcpro and an 11gig QT/Animation/none file. I then use that 11gig master to encode all my other versions for the web or to go to tape etc etc.

Not a pixel gets compressed in that process beyond the one time it compressed by the camera to record the DVCproHD to the P2 card. I use a 500g SATA drive to flop all my versions of the video around. Working properly with video takes A TON OF HARD DRIVE SPACE.
