A series of Vegas inquires

Hey my friends, I've experienced some troubles printing to tape recently. I shot 24pA, edited in a 24p timeline, rendered everything and went to print to tape. However, if if the PTT options I set either of the 24p export options I can't get passed the device control screen - the "next" button is grayed out. If, however, I set the options to export as a standard NTSC DV print to tape, it allows me to select the device control mode and move on past that screen. I have verified that my project settings are NTSC DV 24p (23.976). Why can I export 60i, but not print to tape with the 24p pulldown?
In this circumstance, time was a huge issue, and I eventually decided I'd have to resort to the 60i PTT. However, this resulted in Vegas wanting to re-render everything for 60i (something I could not wait for) and so I tried another option. I set the camera up as a preview device through firewire, played the rendered timeline, and pushed record on the camera. This of course gave me no sound, so I tried another innovative and futile maneuver. I plugged a mini to XLR cable from my soundcard to the DVX. This resulted in no sound whatsoever (does the dvx even accept the XLR inputs in VTR mode?) and now my sound card no longer works.

Everything was going wrong and my deadline was fast approaching. Vegas eventually froze and I had to restart. Now the sound on my computer no longer worked which made me slightly miffed. I decided my only option was to create a DVD. However, when I attempted to export and MPEG-2 file from vegas, I got an unknown error. I was very much saddened by this as I had exported many 24p Mpeg files from Vegas previous to this time and never had problems. In a stressed panic, I tweaked the settings until I found something that would let me export my MPEG. I don't know if it was my changing of the settings or some other bizarre system oddity that eventually let everything work.

I barely got the DVD out in time, and now I'm trying to sort out all my problems. Ultimately Vegas somehow ended up corrupting/deleting my audio (not that I needed that anymore since my computer no longer plays sound). If I go to my hard drive where I had ripped .wma files for use in Vegas, the .wma files are gone and only those .sfk files remain. I haven't touched those files since they were ripped, so I don't know where Vegas has put them. However, 80% of the audio in my project is now missing from my hard drive.

I'm sorry for the length of this post, I probably should have divided its questions into many separate queries. However, most of my concerns boil down to these questions:

1. Can I not print to tape from a 24p timeline to the DVX with a 2:3 or 2:3:3:3 pulldown?

2. Any idea why MPEG-2 24p for DVD-Architect export would give me an unknown error?

3. Any idea what it does to your soundcard when you plug a mini to XLR cable into it and any ideas on how to fix that?

4. Where have the actual .wma files for my project gone and why are they no longer where I put them on the hard drive?

and finally.....

5. Why do good people like you spend so much time reading such lengthy posts and charitably helping out those, like myself, who are in such desperate ignorance?

With much sincere thanks,

Well, there's one solution

Well, there's one solution

This solves the mystery of the missing files...

During the creation of the project my computer had been reconnected to the internet. Windows Media Player had taken all the unknown audio and labeled it and put everything into its own folder once it could connect to the net. With a little more searching I was able to find all the audio...only now it's all named something different and it's not where I want it.

Aaarrghh Windows Media Player, Can't you leave my stuff alone!

Any other answers to my other problems would be appreciated, though. Particularly the issue with printing 24p to tape...

Thanks again!

Yes you can print to tape from a 23.976 time line, When the tape is for archival purposes or to be modified later I use the add 2332 pull down since I can load it up again without recompression, and if the tape is for tv I use the add 23 pull down, but I think that for viewing purposes look the same
