A reminder of why the 180 rule exists.

If you want to see a great example of what not to do, watch tonight's episode of desperate housewives. In the first 5 minutes there is a scene with 4 women at a square table. One on each side and everyone talks. A complicated scene to shoot but boy they got it wrong. I was totally disoriented and based on content, I seriously doubt it was intentional. This show is typically shot beautifully. I suspect the issue may be in the editing. It looks as if it was shot a number of ways, but the editor made horrible choices.

Ok. Maybe I should apologize to the editor. The further I get into the show, the more line jumps I see. I just spotted one in a simple interaction between two people. Easy OTS shots. Like you'd really have to try to screw it up. They did.

Whenever I need to be reminded why the 180 rule is important, I think of how a basketball or football game would look if they broke the 180 line. One team would have the ball running screen right, then the other team would intercept, get the ball, and run... screen right??!
