i just purchased a new camera (dvc30 to be exact) on my older camera i used many diff brands of tapes and i heard this wasnt good for the camera. is it true? should you use the same brand of tape from the start when purchasing a camera? also would it matter what brand? i have a dozen TDK tapes left soo if it doesnt matter i was gunna use these and just stick w/ this brand for the new camera... just wanted some other peoples input because a freind of mine had used diff brands of tapes with his digital 8 and it messed up the head

Well yeah because everybrand uses different lubricants on the tapes.
Some dry and some wet. The purpose is to let the tape record smoothly on the head.

The wet lubricants are the killers. After excessive use of those kind of tapes...the head gets clogged and dirty. Then you start getting artifacts on your images when recording or dropped frames.

The dry lubricants are better... It doesnt clog the head as fast...but it still can over a very long period of use.

Get a tape cleaner too..it looks like a regular Mini DV tape..it has special stuff on it that cleans the head.

I'm not too sure about what brand uses which lubricant..maybe someone else has that answer. But I use Panasonic tapes..and ive had no drop outs or artifacts appear on my videos as of yet.

My understanding is that only Sony uses a wet lube, but it would be wise to use the best panasonic tapes out there which right now are the amq's.
