A question about recording sound to the camera or to a recorder

I am a new filmmaker and I have been reading as much as I can on audio. It is very confusing, but I am getting it....slowly. It appears I may not have the dough right now to get everything I want. In the future, maybe. So I am looking at the two options, recording audio separately to a recorder, or recording straight to the camera using a pre-amp like the DT454. This book I am reading says the sound will be better by using a 2nd recording device. Should I just drop the extra 300 and get it? Or can I just use the DT454 and my camera for now? How much of a difference in quality is there?

I will be recording indoors and outdoors. I plan to get two microphones as well, possible the NTG2 and another one.

It depends to a certain extent on the specific camera and recorder you're comparing. What camera are you using?

I'm using a t3i rebel. I watched one of your videos. Audio seemed pretty decent. I guess I have to get a pre-amp either way, so I might as well get it.

If I'm not mistaken the t3i has manual audio control out of the box - so it should work with the DT454 pretty nicely.
