Hello!

I'm using premiere pro 2.0 and being a noob to this and all, I was wondering if it's possible to recolor a certain area. I took some shots and i have a beautiful blue sky, but in a couple other shots the sky is pretty blown out, is there anyway i could recolor the blown out area to make it blue? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks!

This is better accomplished in After Effect, but if you have to do it in Premiere then you can try using a Garbage Matte. Put two copies of the same footage on top of each other, and apply the Garbabge Matte from the Keying folder to the top layer. Now go to effects control for that layer and select the garbabge matte, then in the preview window you'll see that a series of anchor point has popped up. If you used a 4 point matte then there's 4 points, 8 points matte for 8 and so on. By dragging these points you can specify the shape of the matte. Basically anything inside the mask will be kept and everything else would be cut out. So adjust the mask so that it fits over the area that is blown out (since you don't want to color correct the foreground). Now you can apply whatever color correction tool you want to get it a similar shade to the rest of the footage. If it's a moving shot then you'll have to keyframe the mask so that it follows the path you want. I would try a Level filter first to bring down the brightness and then maybe Curves to give it a blue tint.

This method is tricky though since there might be a hard edge on your footage from the mask. If you post a screen grab I can fiddle with it and be able to give you more specifics.

Or you can use the "replace color" tool and simply replace the "blown out sky" with some other shade of blue. However, if their are other colors similar to the bright white in the clip, it will also change those.

ok, looks like i'm gonna have to learn some stuff, haha :) I unfortunately can't use the replace color because it's a shot on a road and there's white painted on the road, so no go there. I was gonna try to fix it by using the highlights for color correction but there's no dark blue to pick from in the highlights. Ah well, i'll get something figured out :) Thanks for the help!

You may also have some success with a Luma Key but be subtle with it.

You will need some sky to "key in" on a layer below the clip.

Well if youre using PPRo 2.0 its easy and you dont have to use a key efffect or mattes.

Go to your efffects window, twirl down Video effects , twirl down Color Corrector

Then apply the Three Way Color corrector to your clip

Under Tonal range definition , Tonal Range, you'd probably want to set this to Master ( you should see only one color wheel now )

Then up at the top under Output, select Mask

Now, Go to the bottom of that effect and twirl down Secondary Color Correction an d you'll see 'Center' with three eyedropper tools. Select the regular one ( with no + or - ) and you will see you image go back to the composite view.

Click on the color you want to replace. The view will switch back to the 'mask' view and show you the range of color you have selected in white. Now you can use teh eyedropper with + to add to taht selection or the - to remove something.

Once you have a good selection, go back up to the top of that effect in the Effect Controls, and switch your view to Composite. Now you can mess with the color wheel or saturation or hue, or whatever you need and it will only affect that color range what you ahve selected.

You could use a dark blue-ish gradient map starting at the sky and gradually going down to transparent, might look weird though.
