Use that Toshiba 14" flate screen and it works fine.
Also lug it around as a field minitor.
Wuich brings me to a question for Tony?
How's DV Rack?
Easy to use?
Good intestment?
Do I need and expensive lap top to run it?

I had a simlar problems at first with my sony production monitor then I took it in to a repair shop and after some tweaking they corrected the problem and it cost me $30.00 for the labor. A good PVM monitor from Sony tends to be more forgiving. You might try auctions again or have it repaired.

do you really need a production monitor though?
I'd say yes...

But one of the posts above inspire me to ponder the following: Say I have a desktop PC with Vegas installed, and a laptop PC with DVRack on it. If I connect these via firewire (which I know I can do), and I click the 'preview on external device' button, I should be able to see the preview on DVRack's (calibrated) field monitor, no?

Of course, this would be "poor man's" solution, with the "poor man" having a laptop + dvrack software at about twice the price of a real production monitor...

One of you gurus out there - should it work or not?

Smithy, your signature scares the **** out of me. I know how it's possible if I were to write the html and the servlet to return the graphics, but how did you do it to include in your signature? I guess just a link to an image which is the servlet itself?

EDIT:
He he! Not so smart after all! I just opened this thread in Firefox, and it still says I am using IE6! Get it checked, man!

Right-click on the sign and you'll see what to do to get a sig of your own just like it.
Yeah - I often say things just to get inspired and figure out what's up. Let me know if it's too annoying - I'll take it down.

IIRC, I tried this and it doesn't work. DV Rack doesn't respond back to Vegas as if it's a live deck, so Vegas doesn't believe there's an external DV device attached, so it won't pipe the signal out the firewire. I mean, I think it should be able to work, and perhaps if they fix whatever's causing tapeless recording to not work, then maybe it'll address this as well.

In a similar discussion on the Serious Magic forum about using DV Rack as an external monitor for an NLE, the solution was to use a Canopus ADVC110 or ADSTech Pyro AC Link in between the two computers. [if you're a registered SM customer, you can check out the whole thread here: http://www.seriousmagic.com/msgboard/messageview.cfm?catid=16&threadid=6157] I haven't tested this setup, so I can't speak from experience, but the folks who were discussing this know their stuff.

From my layman's perspective, it seems unlikely that the fix for tapeless slave recording will address this issue. Recording in slave to a tapeless DVX involves receiving and interpretting messages directly from the camera (we're currently listening to the driver), whereas the hurdle in getting the DV Rack-as-monitor setup to work is that both Rack and the NLE are looking for AV/C devices with which to communicate. Of course, this is well beyond the borders of any terrain where I even claim expertise, so please don't quote me on it.

Yeah, it sounds to me like DV Rack is acting as a passive "snoop" on the firewire; not really communicating to the camera at all or even letting the camera know it's there, just grabbing the info that the camera posts to the firewire. Kind of like the camera's acting as a radio station, broadcasting a signal, whether there's anyone out there tuned in to it or not. And DV Rack is kind of acting like a radio, tuned into the signal.

Whereas instead of radio, the NLE is expecting a telephone conversation -- a direct connection between two communicating devices, which both acknowledge that the other one's there.

Curious as to how a DVC110 would work though. I mean, it has just one firewire port, doesn't it? We're trying to go from firewire to firewire, computer to computer...

DOH! Research first, ask questions later... I'd only seen pictures of 'em from the front, I thought all the jacks were bidirectional. That form shows that they have separate in & out connectors.

Okay, makes perfect sense now... never mind, move along, nothing to see here... :)

I looked at canopus what it costs I minds well buy another monitor lol THe reason it works I was told because its firewire in and out .
