A prequel to The Phantom Menace?

Larry Rutledge

Fest Master
He says he's finished, but like a two-year-old on the Loo - has he really?

George Lucas tells a scooper for
Cinescape that in the back of his noggin' he has an idea for another add-on to the "Star Wars" movie series : A prequel to "The Phantom Menace".

Nope, not the adventures of young Jar Jar Binks building an underwater haven - but the tales of the Jedi regaining control of the universe from the many Dark Lords some 88 years before Anakin Skywalker's bowl cut ever graced the earth.

Yoda - who was instrumental in the effort - would apparently have a headlining role.

Granted, Lucas, now 60, says he won't be captaining such a ship if it ever happens though. What's the bet FOX is going to lock him in a room, tie him to a chair and request he does anyway though?

Personally, I say go the sequel route - earring adorned Harrison Ford back as vest wearing Solo, whiny Skywalker training Jedi Tykes, C3P0 getting into trouble at Mardis Gras - much more interesting : and Hey, we've already got "Knights of the Old Republic" the video-game to serve as background info on the pre-Anakin days.

Meanwhile, "Revenge of the Sith" hogs the screen at every multiplex and is making quite a packet in doing so - it's now one of the biggest films ever. Yep, bypassed "Mannequin" about five minutes into it's first screening.

No. Just stop already.
Let's see some of those "little art films" that you keep saying you want to make, George. Enough with the Star Wars already!!

Don't forget, he also plans on going back and making all 6 movies 3D.
Maybe no one ever taught him the lesson of "too much of a good thing."

What are you gonna do today George?

Whatever I feel like I wanna do....Gosh!

3D Star Wars......please no.

Hey, I don't mind 3D Star Wars. It's not like he's gonna reshoot the movies... Besides, I've never seen original trilogy on the big screen and would love to be able to :(

Well, don't hold your breath...
You might be able to see a version with new effects, a version in 3D, a new black and white version, a new rotoscoped version, a new version with hayden christensen's face composited over Darth Vader's at the end of 'Jedi'...... but apparently we'll never see the 'Original' trilogy again.

I wonder if Lucas actually think's he's making these films "better," or is he simply doing it for the money. I really hope he's just doing it for the money...

3D would actually be cool if they did it like the "Terminator" ride/theater in Orlando. Now that was cool and the entire system is setup for the experience (moving seats, custom HUGE screen, goggles with blinders, mist, fog, etc).

I could definitely see a permanent home for a Star Wars 3D ride/showing at a theme park. A full simultaneous 6 screen multiplex. I'd go for a weekend for that.

Lucas should make an Episode 0......first to fix all the crap he created in Episode 1......then do Episodes 7, 8, and 9.

Don't worry.....I'm sure there WILL be another Star whores movie made in Lucas' lifetime.

Any of your guys remember that old Saturday Night Live skit where Paul Simon sells his soul to the devil (John Lovitz) and when he dies his punishment is to eternally live in an elevator and listen to muzak versions of his songs? Yeah, after hearing about a prequel to Phantom Menace, I kinda feel like that.

Chris

that's actually sounding cool. that would be a cool movie. We need a movie version of the Knights of the Old Republic. (takes 4000 years before trilogy)
but I guess Yoda being in it would be cool as heck too.
ill go against the grain and say he should make it!!!! and his art films too.

Oh don't worry......when the money runs low......another film will be made. The same thing happens all the time in the Music biz. I mean come on......how man Farewell / Reunion tours can you have? KISS, Rolling Stones, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac......etc.

It just seems that when 10-15 years go by and money gets low......what do they do.......put on another "farewell" tour.

Same thing will happen to Lucas. When funds get low......He'll make an Episode 0 or 7, 8, 9 trilogy. Bet on it!! That is....if he doesn't die of a heart attack first. Damn Fatty Arbuckle!!

LUCAS: EAT FRESH!!

I've always thought that the guy can do whatever he wants. I still feel like the first 2 SW films put him in a semi-sacred place for me. It's been all downhill from there, but still....it's his money. We don't have to see the films if we don't want to.

Still though...I'd love to see a film about the backstory of Han Solo and Leia. Back story on Luke would be a little boring, but maybe he and Biggs could get in a Cantina fight with some Jawas.

I agree with you on certain levels, but at what point does an artist have to respect the audience? I'm asking this question on a general filmmaker level, not specific to Lucas or Star Wars.

Personally whenever I make a film I have my audience in mind. I certainly make films for personal reasons, but the audience is always a consideration. If I were ever fortunate enough to make a film that affected as many people as much as Star Wars has, then any follow-up to that film I would try to make something for the fan base. Especially if I didn't touch it for 25 years. That's an awful lot of time for a story to become ingrained into the collective psyche of everyone and I think at that point there's some resposibility that should be taken by the filmmaker. It kind of belongs more to the world than to one person at that point.

Again, in a general filmmaking sense, what are some thoughts on that?

Yea I agree with that as well. It's not like I haven't been disappointed. It's like when a band you love puts out an album in a direction you don't get. Or you go to one of their concerts and they are too drunk to play well. You feel let down and a bit betrayed. Certainly when you put something out to the public there's a sense that it belongs to everyone. I'm sure that's up for debate.

In the case of Lucas, I guess I would't mind if there seem to be 1/10th the effort in the story that there was in the effects. But that doesn't seem to be a priority for him.

He should have just opened the universe for other filmmakers to do other stories and left the 3 orginals as they were.

So someone else would do a film dealing with the other adventures of Han Solo, or something.

Or maybe one about what happened when the Hoka and the Fuzzies ganged up on the Ewoks. ;)

I understand what you're saying, but I think there's a distinction between a misstep, and blatantly ignoring your fans. I mean when Phantom Menace came out (dang, this is really hard to talk about this without specifically bringing Lucas into it) Lucas was adamant that he didn't care what the fans thought, this was his story. And, like you said, on some levels he's certainly right. But at the same time if I made the first film of a trilogy and the fans were like "Not diggin' that one too much." Then I'd adjust my perspective for film two and try to get back on target regardless of whether or not I had my "story" to tell. I just think there's some resposibility that the filmmaker has to the audience. Maybe I'm wrong.

And to be fair, I think that the backlash that the fans sent Lucas's way after Phantom was WAY out of line. I'm no fan of the prequel trilogy, but man, no one deserves that much negativity. And perhaps that adds a new dynamic to the argument. Was Lucas being stubborn because of the backlash of the fans? Likewise, if you made a film that received as much negative feedback as Phantom Menace, how would you react? Would you become defensive and say that the fans don't matter, or that you didn't care what they thought you were going to make your movie? Or would you take is as constructively as possible and try to improve?

These are some hard questions, and I don't think anyone can truly answer without being in that situation, but it makes for good discussion. :)

I'd go see it!

please no more. the series will become known more for these bloated monstrosities than it's original brilliance. it's bad enough that we've got Yoda hawking Pepsi and Chewbacca selling ring tones.

I want someone one to do a another spin off on the Ewoks! I like those little fellas! Forget pre stuff I want my Ewoks! :)

I have to admit though, Darth Vader slashing that guys mop handle with a light saber killed me, I thought it was great. It looks as if Darth thought the guy was challenging him with a mop, perfect

And the one where the storm trooper gets reprimanded for firing lasers into the ovens was funny I thought.

I know, I know, I'm coporate consumer fodder but I liked those two.
