A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

It just seemed to rip off the iconic shots way too much for my liking.

Pretty big opening weekend - 33mil.

nice.

what i found odd, when i went to watch the movie, is that there were a lot of children in the theater. 5 years old average.

i guess it could double as a fun family movie?

I think that the reason the film has such a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes is that people are obsessively comparing it with the original. And in a sense, comparing the two films is totally legitimate for obvious reasons: the new one is a remake of the original, and shares the same name, and shares roughly the same story if not the exact events of the plot.

But the problem in comparing the two is the original film is like...legendary. If you were to ignore that there had been an original, the new Nightmare might even be considered decent to pretty good. It's like if you were to remake another landmark of film, say something like Fritz Lang's Metropolis, even if you did an excellent job on it you'd still fall short of the original and thus be subject to harsher criticism.

So, to summarize: I think the new Nightmare is actually decent. It's just that the original is SO GOOD that it makes the new Nightmare look piss-poor, which is something that's reflected in ratings on sites like Rotten Tomatoes.
When you make a movie like this, you have to expect comparisons to the original. Remake Casablanca and you are really setting yourself up for failure.

there have already been at least two unofficial remakes of Casablanca so far. Barb Wire (1996) and Havana (1990).

The same when I went to see the Friday the 13th remake. My girlfriend and I went to an afternoon showing. There was a woman there with her grandson(?) who couldn't have been over ten.

^^that's funny. i guess it really doesn't matter--better understand that it's all make believe sooner rather than later.
